General Guidelines for APA In-Text Citations (337)
- Identify
the author(s) of the source, either in the sentence or in a
parenthetical citation. Use only
the last name of the author(s).
- Indicate
the year of publication of the source following the author’s name, either
in parentheses if the author’s name is part of
the sentence, or, if the author is not named in the sentence, after the
author’s name and a comma in a parenthetical citation.
- Include
a page reference for a quotation or a specific piece of
information. Put a p. before the
page number. If the author is
named in the text, the page number appears in the parenthetical citation
following the borrowed material.
Page numbers are not necessary when you are summarizing the
source as a whole or paraphrasing an idea found throughout a work.
- If
the source does not have page numbers (as with many online sources), do
your best to direct readers toward the specific part of the text you are
citing (for example, citing the section title of the online
source). If the source has no
page or paragraph numbering or easily identifiable headings, just use
the source name and date.
