_____1.  As preparatory reading, please read Paragraphs Made Easy and Essays Made Easy, choices #1 and #2 in our Course Documents.

 

_____2.  Next, please skim read for general content and advice Steps to Writing Well, Chapter 3, “The Body Paragraphs,” pp. 47-78 (47-78).

 

_____3.  Then, continue to skim read for general content and advice Steps to Writing Well, Chapter 4, “Beginnings and Endings,” pp. 79-90 (79-87).

 

_____4.  Next, please read carefully the following sections of our text, Steps to Writing Well:

 

       ____“Exposition,” pp. 183-184 (179-180).

 

       ____Strategy One: Development by Example, pp. 184-191 (180-185).

 

  ____Sample Essay “River Rafting Teaches Worthwhile Lessons,” pp. 191-193 (187-189)

  ____Sample Essay “So What’s So Bad about Being So-So?” pp. 193-195 (189-191)

 

        ____Strategy Four: Development by Definition, pp. 236-240 (232-236) 

 

        ____Sample Essay “Blind Paces,” pp. 242-245 (238-241)

 

        ____Sample Essay “The Munchausen Mystery,” pp. 245-247 (241-243)

 

_____4. After you have read the above pages, select either Development by Example or Development by Definition for your first essay.

 

      ____The essay topics for both essays structures can be found at this link.

 

_____ 5. Select a topic from the appropriate list of essay topics above and write a five-paragraph essay. 

    Ñ (Use one of the above sample essays or The Milkshake Essay as an example of structure and format.)

 

 _____6. Write multiple drafts until you have something worth sharing with your reader.

 

 _____7. By midnight Sunday, April 20, please post your completed rough draft (cut-and-paste) to the Forum Essay #1--group rough drafts and responses in your Writing Group.
