The National Council for Learning Resources sponsored a session entitled "Free the Textbook: The Rise
of Open Texts" at the AACC Annual Conference, New Orleans, Sunday, April 10, 2011. Panelist: Jeff Shelstad,
the founder and executive director of Flat World Knowledge, Inc., NY.
Program Description: This session took an inside look at the textbook affordability crisis and
the rise of "open textbooks" as a new model that is challenging the traditional publishing world. It is
an innovative approach that offers community college students accessibility and affordability.
