Without TCP/IP; there would be no Internet or no sharing of files over a network. TCP/IP is literally the brains that allow one computer to talk to another. TCP/IP has taken years to perfect. #2: Every time a person uses the Internet that person is using TCP/IP to communicate. If a person wants to play a game with a friend using separate computers 90% of the time, they are using TCP/IP. If an employee wants to send his supervisor a typed report over the network, they are using TCP/IP. There are other protocols such as IPX/SPX, Appletalk and NetBeui, but they are not as stable as TCP/IP or as widely used. ******************************************************************************* Contact_FullName: Jack Starr Contact_Email: jestarr9@hotmail.com #1: The CE models offer a carved maple top and a mahogany back. I looked at mine and drew a blank. I know there is always improvement to be made on my reports, but when I look at them to make changes I just draw a blank. I have already spent several hours writing and rewriting my reports, so for me to make more changes is really hard. I find it easier to edit other peoples papers. Maybe it is easier because the material is new, and I have not spent a lot of time on it already. If this will not work please let me know. I will make changes if necessary. Also, if you have paragraphs that need changes that match the work sheet that might help. For me that might help in learning the material. Whatever you decide, I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving. Take Care. Dave D. Before: Of course, as almost every one who sees the computer for first time is afraid, I was afraid too when I saw the computer for first time. Thanks to Jan Strever, who was my first teacher at SCC one year ago. Jan taught me the initial knowledge of the operating the computer at her English-94 class, where she also had taught I not be afraid any computer. Then Jan encouraged me to learn computers more and more. Now, my knowledge of the computer is not very poor, I even can share what I inquired with readers. For example, how to emaile the electronic exchange of mail among people. After: I was afraid when I saw the computer for the first time, as many people usually are. Jan Strever, my SCC English teacher taught me how to operate a computer, and now I am not afraid to use one. Now my knowledge of the computer is much better, and I am now able to use e-mail to communicate with people. #2: Before: After following this process, you will have spent a few fun hours together, without electricity! Whether you try this once or decide to make it a monthly campout, you will be making fun memories. These days it’s hard to find the time to spend with your children without interruption, and we all need this from time to time. The reason I thought of doing this is because we lost power for an hour one day and my son was balling his head off, for some reason this was scary for him. That night I decided to make sure all of the kids were home and, all of a sudden, we “lost power”. We had so much fun, that now they ask me when we are going to lose power again. After: Power outages can be fun and not scary when people prepare for them. By having a fake power outage you will be preparing for the real thing. Then whether the outage is real or fake you will be prepared and not afraid. The family will also be spending uninterrupted time together having fun and making memories. My son, who was afraid when we had our first real power outage, actually looks forward to the next power outage. By being prepared and having fake power outages, our whole family is able to have fun instead of being afraid. Maybe your family can also have fun with fake power outages? ******************************************************************************* Contact_FullName: Mark Birdsill Contact_Email: birdsill@hotmail.com #1: Buying Microsoft’s Windows desktop operating system requires that you pay well over one hundred dollars per user license. Add several hundred more to each machine that requires an office suite for word processing or maintaining a database. Small office’s equipped with four computers will feel the financial bite for technology. Windows permits peer-to-peer networking but allows only the person sitting in front of the computer to use the features of the operating system. Windows source code is jealously guarded so only Microsoft programmers may make bug fixes or security updates. This is done according to marketing strategies. A classic example, in 1995 all support was dropped for MS-DOS in order to force consumers to buy Windows95. #2: The many distribution or ‘flavors’ of Linux is free to obtain and use. Simply download the operating system from the Internet, write it to disk and install. If you want hardcopy documentation or don’t have broadband Internet access, department stores offer Linux desktop packages for a fraction of the cost of Windows. With our small office example, almost five hundred dollars is saved over MS Windows and to keep saving money, we choose one of several free office suites. UNIX was first developed in 1969 for mainframe computers and allowed many users to connect and use the computer at the same time without disturbing each other. Linux networking is based on this idea. Open source allows bug fixes and security updates to be released much faster than Microsoft because there is no corporate bureaucracy. Any programmer with skill can make fixes or customize Linux. ******************************************************************************* Contact_FullName: Robert Johnston Contact_Email: RobertJohnston66@cs.com #1: Microsoft made improvements to device support and plug-and-play software in Windows XP. Memory Pool Management and Memory Throttling reduce memory related system crashes and system bottlenecks. #2: On September 25, 2001, I purchased a Hewlett-Packard 5350 laptop computer. Upon arrival the laptop displayed hardware problems. The problems include an unsupported serial port, non-adjustable right speaker volume, and misaligned laptop lid. I contacted your help technicians and performed all recommended procedures, however, the procedures failed to repair the laptop. The warranty gives me ninety days to return the product for any reason. I would like to return the laptop. The list of what should be there is in the owner’s manual. Next you must remove the three-strand cable from the plastic bag it is in, it has three color-coded male plugs on each end. The red and white plugs are the audio jacks and the yellow ones are for the video signal. On the back of the DVD player are six connectors, one for coaxial cable, three video outs, and two audio outs (#1 is extra use #2). One of the video outs is for an optional “S-video” cable (not included). The two audio outs are for left and right speakers. The red coded socket is for the right speaker while the white is for the left. The yellow sockets are for the video. To hookup the DVD player, connect your cable or TV antenna to the coaxial connector. Then simply insert the male plugs on the cable into the female sockets, which have the same color code (as the cable). Next look on the back of your TV, most new TV’s are set up with the same sockets as the DVD player. All that is required is to insert the male plugs into the female sockets of the same color. Fortunately, they are also labeled. Unfortunately, the cable is not. Next plug in the power cord for the DVD player, and make sure the TV is plugged in also. Revised Paragraph 1 First check to see if all the parts are there, the list is in the owner’s manual. Next take the cable with the three color-coded plugs from the bag. Red and white for audio, yellow for video. On the back of the DVD player are the sockets for the cable, red for the right speaker white is left. The same for the back of the TV remember the yellow is video. Attach your cable or antenna to the connector on the DVD player making sure that everything is plugged in. Put the batteries in the remote, follow the set up directions in the manual and you are ready to go. #2: Original Paragraph 2 On Monday 11/8/01, I was asked to compare laser printers for our office network use. After researching several printers I have narrowed it down to these two choices the XEROX Phaser 860B and the HP Color Laser Jet 4550N. The cost and capabilities of each will be addressed in this report. Revised Paragraph 2 On 11/8/01, I was asked to compare printers for office use. After researching printers it narrowed down to the XEROX Phaser 860B, or the HP Color Laser Jet 4550N, cost and capabilities follow. ******************************************************************************* Contact_FullName: William M.
