Here is an exercise designed to help you think about conciseness in writing.  Review the criteria below before you begin the exercise.

In technical writing:

bulletDon't be chatty or add extra information.
bulletUse short to the point sentences. If a sentence is over twenty words long, it is too wordy.
bulletSay what you mean right now.  "You will begin assembling the parts" is much more confusing than, "Assemble the parts."
bulletAvoid redundancies: 
bulletthe month of May=May
bulletnew innovation=innovation
bulletduring the year 1998=1998.

Rewrite the following sentences.  Your purpose is to reduce these sentences to their most basic meaning.

  1. Name
    E-mail
  2. At this point in time, the software is expensive due to the fact that it has no competition.


  3. In the course of human events, many changes have occurred, especially in the field of technology.


  4. Often times, moreover, confusion occurs, in addition to misunderstanding, when people who don't read carefully skim instead of scan.


  5. During the week, well, really only on Mondays, the class of students discuss new, upcoming assignments geared to making the class of students better, efficient, proficient, enabling the class of students to write better reports.


  6. Clear writing promotes clear thinking at least that is one well-known, famous, notorious writer, who is also known as an excellent tennis player and wrestler reported in the new recent edition of Newsweek. His name is Arthur Art. I read the magazine at Auntie's Bookstore which located on the corner of Washington, next to the park.
