To Help the Process of Memorization

  1. Know your task
  2. Plan your approach
  3. Apply technique
  4. Monitor
  5. Evaluate

Encode the material to be learned.
  1. Focus attention
  2. Make material meaningful
  3. Make it interesting
  4. Organize information in a logical manner

Store the material.
  1. Repetition and rehearsal
  2. Study in manageable chunks: develop

acronyms--first letter of each word, i.e, Fanboys, use for key concepts

acrostics--using creative sentences with first letter of words, use for learning lists of words

imaginative stories--large amounts of information

systems of association--associate new concept or idea with similar sounding ones

visual--draw representations of the information to be learned
    * locational--draw a familiar place, give each item names that you are learning
    * representational--draw actual graphs and charts
    * transformational--transform the information into a diagram or cartoon of your own making

Spaced study -- study in short sessions

Retrieve Information

1. Self-testing
2. Cooperative Learning
3. Reversing Storage
4. Practice, practice practice
5. Periodic review
6. Problem solving

alphabet--think of each letter in the alphabet to help trigger information

retrace steps--redo an activity
