JACOBS SHANTEL -- This is Shantel Jacobs
Not just a "plain Jane"
A future child psychologist
here to stay
What a unique and organized one
tattooed with colossal of endless paint
from the top to the end of her thumb
Who was lost in the crowd at an unyielding rate
overwhelmed that you can see
Piled high with books from A to Z
She sells "Pamper Chef"
from door to door
Looking to find something more
Once was told to read books she hated
Come to think of it; it was just overrated
Born to her was a son
And his name is "Ebon"
As he listened from the womb
Stories of "mummies in a tomb"
She is a Libra and a lot of fun
Usually her hair is not in a bun.

PURVIS JOLYNE -- I recently had a chance to sit down with 25 year old Jolyne Purvis, in my Introduction to Poetry Class. The outgoing and vocal Purvis is an English Major and plans to put those skills to work in the classroom by obtaining her teaching certification following her studies at SCC. It has been a long and frustrating experience for Jolyne thus far at SCC. “I am really getting frustrated with the constantly changing requirements here at SCC. I am having to take almost two quarters of extra classes due to changes in the English Major, “ exclaims Purvis. While outside of the classroom, Jolyne likes to stay active and fit. She works out a few times a week and loves to play volleyball. She also has a love of reading and writing, while still finding time to mentor youth girls. As an avid reader, it is hard for Purvis to choose one literary experience as her favorite; she enjoys a variety of books and poetry. On the other hand, she cites World Literature as her least favorite literary experience, due to the heavy load of forced reading. As a general practice, Jolyne prefers to work alone on class assignments versus working in small groups. “Every group has at least one flake that always has some excuse why they can’t be there.” states Purvis. If she is forced to work in a small group, she feels that her leadership skills and outgoing attitude will serve both her and the group well. The words “fun” and “influencer” are two of the adjectives the Spokane Native thinks describe her best. The Introduction to Poetry class is an opportunity for Jolyne to explore her love for reading and writing. “I hope to get better at reading and understanding Poetry. I really like to write poetry as well.” explains Purvis. She feels like this class will afford her the opportunity to hone these skills. She has worked with Dr. Jan Strever before in a previous class and is looking forward to doing so again. by Phipps Joe

When we once laid our heads,
To visions of Dr. Suess and Monsters under the bed.
Experiences to further grow
"To learn things I didn't know".
To leap forward head, feet, and fist
Yet still unsteady at all a mist
Memories of dreadful speakings,
Consequences for shyness, keeping.
To hear me now oh how they would laugh
Shyness no more, the most talkative in class!
Pleasures of looking deep within
To assist in care of other men
Nursing, forever a path to make
One she's chosen to take
Ideas arising poetic thoughts insight
For all's ahead of her
As she closes her eyes tight

TOLZIEN SHAENA --

I’d like you all to meet my friend ambitious and blatant Shaena Tolzien. Shaena is a running start student who is currently completing her second year at SCC. Shaena is trying to obtain her AA degree and then upon graduating intends to transfer to Purdue. There she will major in clinical psychology with a minor in Business Management. Shaena has had a very positive experience at SCC. She stated that last year was fantastic and amazing! She was on student council and this opened the door to many new friendships. This year she has a lot of the hard classes she will have to take to graduate and she is very anxious about this. Shaena is a very active person outside of school. She works 30 hours a week, volunteers at the second harvest food bank and avidly goes to church. Shaena thinks reading is a definite pleasure. She especially loves to read fictional and creative writings. She marvels in Vignettes and loathes the novel Shane. She generally doesn’t prefer to work in groups but if she has to she likes to keep it to a partnership. If working in a group is unavoidable she believes that her creativity would enhance the success of the group. In this class Shaena would like to improve her writing and would love to chance to be able to write vignettes of her own. by Renee Basler
