1) Analyze and explain the use and apparent purpose of one specific stylistic device in a poem from this section.  Select a device that seems particularly important to the underlying goals of the poem.  Possible devices to analyze: characterization, metaphor, image, line length, sound, rhythm, setting, structure, paradox, symbolism.  2). In addition choose one prose piece from this section that also depends on the device you have chosen and compare and contrast the use of the device in the two works.

Rhetorical device:

To help with this assignment, you will want to refer to the elements of fiction and elements of poetry handouts created for you. Also, since introductions are so necessary to good writing, take a risk and try out a new style.  Use the introduction handout to help you. In this type of seminar, find two or three poems or stories that you really like, then choose one of the devices you are most comfortable with, for example metaphor.  Read through the first poem trying to locate metaphor. Mark it. Then look for the next.  When finished, go to the next poem or story.  Do this on two or three at most.  Now review all three of the pieces. Which one has the most use of metaphor? Which is the one that was most interesting? That is the one you should write about. Put the others aside with your notes, as you might use them another time.  Good luck to you!
