As a writer in English 201 I came to develop my writing skills even further. I was not dissapointed to say the least. I would say my skills and knowledge in conducting research have greatly improved. Not only did I learn to conduct research, but I also learned to organize this information in to a well-written final draft. One weakness that I know I need to work on is the way I write my papers. Sometimes I end up writing good papers, but there might be some bias in them. I feel that the ability to write non-biased pieces of writing is very important.

3_items

improved_most

proudest_of

Well, I am proud of finally completing the class with a decent grade. I would say I feel the best about the research papers I wrote. After conducting hours of research, it was time to finally put it all together. I feel that my research papers were well organized. One thing that helped me to organize my papers was my development, too. After taking English 201 I feel that I am ready for higher english classes.

student_advice

I would have to tell myself to keep up the good work. I know that I am beginning to fully understand how to write a good paper. I now understand the importance of audience awareness when writing a paper too. Also, I would say: "try writing with less bias." Sometimes when I write an informative paper there is a hint of bias which I need to work on. Not too bad, though.

contributed

I feel as though I contributed many ideas to the class. Through the seminars and the in-class discussions I was able to contribute my opinions on certain issues which were in the news in the past. I also feel that I contributed help to other students as well. Through the peer editing I was able to give my input and make any corrections to different people's papers. I think that everybody contributed something good to the class, including me.

which_grade

I would probably give myself a letter grade of a B. The reason for that is simply because I don't deserve an A and I don't necessarily deserve a C. I don't deserve an A because there were times when I didn't try my hardest. Also, there were times when I was just lazy to write a good paper. I don't deserve a C because I feel that the quality of my work most of the time was above average, but not the best. I think that a B is better than average, but not the best, which would constitute an A.

Question

I liked the class and I thought it was effective in helping me become a better writing through research and audience awareness.

Things I have improved on this quarter are: My ability to effectively do research, organization, and voice. Thre research papers we did this quarter really helped me learn how to do research on my own and I learned some new tools that I have as a writer to do that research with. My organization still needs some work but it has definitely improved this quarter. I'm still not very good at writing an effective outline that I stick to and I think that is the main reason my organization suffers. My voice has improved this quarter mainly because I was a little more free to write how I want. Except that method paper...that was a killer. When I can write more freely my voice comes through much stronger than when I am restricted.

3_items

proudest_of

I feel proudest about the research papers. Usually I just fly through those types of assignments but this quarter I put more effort into them. Plus they were some of the better papers I've written.

student_advice

Spend more time getting organized and don't be afraid to trash work that is already done if I find a better idea or methodology for a paper.

contributed

I contributed a little insight during class discussions and hopefully helped people look at some of their ideas in a little different light.

which_grade

I would give myself an A or a B. Because I did all the work and spent a fair amount of time on this class this quarter. I participated in class discussions and did my best to be there every day.

Question

I thought the lectures were the most helpful along with the excercises.

I have gain the most important thing to a writer; the confidence. As a any writer would probly say about the weakness that would need to work on is organization of the paper. Getting sentences to mix the right way to make the paper just right.

That I hated to write because of a bad experience with a professor. I have learned that I don't only love to write, but have a passion to write. I am a good writer once I put my mind to it.

improved_most

I have improved the most on is the clearity of my papers. I can write a paper to get my point across the way to help the reader get the point. There were times that people have come up to me and asked what are saying here. The thing I need to improve on is reading my papers before I trun them.

The strenghts I have gained as a writer are emense. Last quarter my 101 class was dissappointing to say the least. The feelings I had about my writing ranged from inadequate to feeling that there was ability to at least do the work. This quarter and specifically this class I know that thesis statements and ideas of mine work together. I have the ability to write something that has opinion and is worth at least reading once. The opinion I now have of my writing ability is that of improvement, ability, and a better sense of understanding of composition. I need to work on and learn about MLA format and citing information

3_items

I can write, I can create language in a format that works and I can do the job befor me regardless of what happens in my life. Stating that I can write is huge for me. As a child I remember one of my parents critisizing an article I had written. He stated that I had used to many I's in my colume. The critizim was warrented yet he was not in the home and didn't help me in anyway with this so the evaluation was hurtfull and stifled my writing due to my lack of self esteem. The most important item about myself is that I can achieve in school. My first try at college was a failure and this time around I am enjoying myself and achieving! yeah!!

improved_most

The improvement that seems most important to me is my ability to express and prove my opinion in a format that is appropriate for the assignment. Again the improvement if understanding MLA, grammer issues I carry from childhood and probobly general composition.

proudest_of

That I was able to do the work. My life is really full and last quarter I had english 101 and Intro to Education. Both were writing intensive. I felt that getting this class done was a great next step however, I have realized that math 96, psycology and this class was overtaxing. Along with working and activities that I have writing became the last thing I wanted to do. So in honesty that I was able to complete assignments and get some of the journaling done.

student_advice

To read more diverse writings, study how others write and write more.

contributed

Sometimes I felt like I was the only one who had the guts enought to answer Jan's questions even if they might be wrong. I feel I did contribute to the class and discussion groups. They were enjoyable and thought provoking

which_grade

My overall proformace was between a high C and low B. I didn't complete everything that was required and could have done better on levels of writing. However I have enjoyed this class and have learned a quite a bit overall.

Question

Jan, after reading your "appology" the disruption of your life issues was not to disturbing for me in this class. My only critique would be an overal general review of what engligh 101 should have taught us and this will help you know what students understand and know coming into your class. I learned and reviewed old knowledge with you more than any in eng 101. Thanks for your time and concise lectures they were very helpful.

As far as overall strength I'm not sure if I really gained anymore. I think I put in more time when writing a paper but as far as my overall ability that hasn't changed. I think that I try to consider what the teacher is looking for more now than I did before. I still have many weaknesses. I still am very stubborn and have trouble writing about and doing things that I feel are a waste of time, or I just don't care about. If I don't care about something then I will just write whatever to get it over with. Using MLA has become easier for me also. There are still some things that I struggle with but I do feel I have made a little improvement.

3_items

improved_most

proudest_of

What I'm most proud of is the final research paper. I put moretime and thought into it than I did any of my other papers. I know it is not perfect and it could have been improved a lot but I still think it is decent. I enjoyed writing it much more than I did the first research paper. It was also much easier to write because we had already written one. I like to think that the first was more of a practice paper in some ways. Once I had all of my information it was fairly easy to write. Getting it organized and putting all the information together seemed to come together very easily.

student_advice

The most important thing I would tell myself is just try to be more confident. If you think you can do something it is much easier. I spend too much time whining and thinking that I can't handle it. Also, to just try and do my best and really try to get interested in something. Many times I write things off becasue I don't feel that it is important to me. I would also try to be more open to learning more things. Once a interest has been sparked the whole writing process goes better for everyone involved. It also makes for a much more interesting paper.

contributed

I really don't think that I contributed a whole lot. In seminars I really didn't talk a lot and didn't have much to say. I think that I gave other classmates some good feedback on peer edit days, but still I am no expert. If I'm being completely honest that's really all I contributed. There was more I could have done but I did what I could at the time.

which_grade

I would give myself about a B. I showed up everyday and did all the assignments to the best of my ability. Even if other people did more (Journal entrys for example) I don't think we should be compared. They did what they felt they had to do and I did what I could. English is such a complex and objective subject that it is hard to compare people. Peoples skills are all over the place, some really struggle while others seem to thrive. I struggled with some things but I still made it through. Considering a lot of people ceased to show up I think I did alright for myself. If I could go back in time I would have done things differently, but that is not possible. In others words I feel I deserve the grade that I have.

Question

One of the benefits of the class was the webpage. Even though I don't like computers very much it was nice to be able to go to the lab and do things, or do it at home. I think it is better than sitting in a classroom for an hour being bored. Being able to look at grades online was also nice. It was a good way to look at my progress. Or to see where I was struggling. Seeing the weeks overview was also very informative. Though there were times when it wasn't very clear, and I wanted more detail. Overall, it was a good class tool.

Oh my gosh, I was essay-blind! At the beginning of this class my writing was scattered all over the place, jumping from one idea to the next before completing one. They say, “Practice makes perfect.” Do not misunderstand me here, I do not mean I am perfect after taking this class. I mean my writings definitely got much better than what it was. Learning writing is like learning to play musical instrument, it takes practicing over and over until it produce harmonious melody that audience can enjoy. To be honest, this is the only class in which I really able to see the most important concepts a writer has to be equipped with in order to write an essay that have a savor to readers. Basic values that an essay has to contain such as, concepts and importance of introductions, audience awareness, methods of development and conclusions are some of the skills I learned from this class. English 201 class changed my concept of writing and enhanced my writing skills in many ways.

I believe that I have become more open-minded on contraversial issues. That is a strength characterized in my writing because I try to discuss both sides of an issue, rather than just the one I agree with. Also, I have gained more insight by being able to listen to the differing viewpoints of my peers, which keeps me from being labeled ignorant...I hope. The weakness I need to work on the most is writing my papers to a specific audience. Having an audience to write to is sure helpful in setting the tone for any paper.

3_items

The most important aspect I learned of myself is that I truly enjoy having discussions with my peers. I find their opinions to be refreshing and interesting, which is helpful in my own work. I also discovered that I am an abstract thinker because I tend to look at all sides of an issue before drawing a conclusion. A third important item I gained from the class is my ability to apply different methods of writing in my essays. The methods are certainly useful in writing lengthy papers!

In English 201, we learned many different writing techniques that we used to improve our writing. Throughout the class, I feel there are many strengths that I have gained. One of the skills we learned was to write to our audience. Before I took this class, I never thought about the audience I was writing to, instead I would just take off writing with no audience in mind. Now that I have taken this class and learned about audience, I feel that my overall writing has greatly improved. Now, before I start to write I actually think about who my audience is and gear my paper towards them. Another technique we leaned was level 1 writing. I never knew what level 1 writing was until I took this class. Now that I know what it is, I began to try and write in level one. I think since trying this writing technique, my writing has greatly improved. Even though I gained a lot of strengths from this class, I still have some weaknesses that need a little work. For example, I use the words there is, there was, and it is a little too more than I need to. I believe this is the one thing I really need to work one. I don’t know that I really do it until I get my paper back and it is marked. I also would like to become a little bit more detailed in my writing. I want the readers to get a visual in their head while they are reading and when they finish they have completely understood the whole paper without any confusion.

Throughout the course of the quarter, there are many things that I learned about myself as a student. The biggest thing that I learned about myself is to have patience. There were a couple of times that I became so frustrated that I was about ready to give up. I learned that it takes time to write papers. If I don’t get the concept on the first try, I need to be patient because it will eventually come to me. I believe this is one thing that I still really need to work on. Another thing I learned about myself is to have confidence. I would write a paper, but I would get frustrated because I didn’t think that other people would understand it, or I though it sounded dumb. I figured out that I need to become comfortable writing and not worry about what other people think. Once I gain some more confidence, my overall writing will probably improve. One last thing I learned about myself is you can’t be a procrastinator. Writing is a subject that takes lots of time and editing. A person can’t sit down and write a ten page paper in an hour. It just won’t happen. I think this is the biggest problem that students have. I learned from the beginning that this can’t be done and fixed the problem before it got any worst. I’m sure glad that I did because my grade will reflect the changes that I made.

improved_most

In English 201, I feel like I improved the most on my overall writing. In the course we learned different ways to write longer papers. After I learned some of the techniques, my papers were getting longer and I wasn’t repeating myself like I used to do. I would repeat myself to make the paper longer, but it actually made the paper boring. I also think the thesis exercises has helped improve the way I write my thesis. I now know exactly what to put in them and also what not to put into them. Like I mentioned earlier, I still do have weaknesses. The major weakness I have is using there is, there was, and it is. I know that in my next English class, I will break this habit. It takes away from my writing and that is the last thing that I want to happen. It takes time to become a great writer, but eventually that is my goal and someday I will reach it.

Throughout the quarter, I participated in many peer edit exercises. I believe along with my ideas and the peer edit sessions, these are the biggest things that I contributed to this class. After the rough drafts of papers were written, we would buddy up with a partner and peer edit each others paper. It’s always nice to have the input of other people. I tried my hardest to help my partner improve their writing. I not only gave them new ideas, but also helped them with their mistakes. Hopefully, I had a little input on their writing. After the drafts were written, we would have our seminar days. I also feel like I contributed to the group on these days. I would share my paper with the group and give them information on the topic. Some of the information I was disrupting to the group was new to them and maybe helped expand their minds.

which_grade

If I were to evaluate my overall performance in English 201, I would probably give myself an A. All quarter long, I worked my hind end off by trying to improve my overall writing. I believe, now that it is at the end of the quarter I have done a good job on this. This was one of the goals I had and I feel like I have somewhat accomplished it. It takes a long time to become a really good writer, but I feel eventually some day in the future I can reach that goal.

As a writer I would say I have gained more knowledge about the levels of abstraction, and the importance of the audience. I still need to work on the levels of abstraction but I learned a lot about them this quarter.

Everything, this class has taught me a lot about myself personally but also as a writer, and I still need to improve on everything as well, you can never learn too much.

The most important thing that I feel I contributed to the class is my outgoing personality, I made a point to say hi to everyone and see how they were doing. Also... I feel that I shared the ideas that I feel are important, and most of my papers that I wrote were subjects that I felt strongly about and my classmates were able to understand me a little more everytime.

Walking into this class from an English 101, I could not possibly think what else I needed to know to be able to go and complete an essay. But in the end I gained a lot from this class. Not just skills or techniques that could be helpful to me in the future but I learned a lot about myself as a student. First of all, I usually am pretty bad at research papers. I get some information mainly the majority so I understand it completely, but I soon realized there is so much more information that I did not even bother to look for and it made me weaker as a student. The more information that I gain, will only make me stronger and more diverse with writing topics that I will have to face in the future. Because of this class I also realized I need to be more structured on the time that I allow myself to write a paper. In this class I was able to get going on a topic, a couple weeks before the due date and then I noticed that my papers always came out stronger and I received better grades on them. In the past I always begun my paper a couple days before the actual due date, I finished it in time but I never left my desk feeling completely satisfied with my work. Most importantly I learned that I could write. This may seem strange, but I never had confidence in my skills. I hated when other read my work and I never wanted my teacher to talk to me after he or she graded my papers because I was so unsure of my skills. But thanks to this class, I have more confidence in my writing skills and the techniques that I was able to gain; I can now apply which will only lead me to greater abilities.

I feel that I have accomplished a lot in this class. However, there is one skill that I just now accomplished this winter quarter stands out the most. Usually writing is always a pleasure. I love to think about my topic for a while and then I just seem to go crazy, and sit for a couple of good hours and just write. But, in the past that is when I stopped. I would have one other person look at it, correct and never read it again. After I wrote the first draft, I would scan it once more, have someone else look at it, and then never touch it again until I had to turn in. That was my whole entire writing process. But, in English 201 that was not going to work anymore the standards were set to high, and if I went about writing how I normally did my grade would suffer severely. That point got across when on my very first journal, even though it was not a huge assignment, I could tell that I would have to put forth a little more effort. Yes the transition from my original writing process which was really quick and not in depth, to spending a couple of days working on one paper was difficult but I am proud to say that I am finally adjusting. Now I am able to spend at least a couple of days on one paper and really addressing my topic to the fullest of my capability. This has to be one of my greater accomplishments this quarter.

student_advice

As a writer, I would probably tell myself to not rush through things so fast. Take the time and enjoy the entire process. I am always rushing through things even if I have a lot of time to spare, in my head I am always telling myself to hurry so that I can be done with it. In the end this doesn’t help me as a writer, because I missing things such as details or making silly errors because I am trying to hurry. If I can learn to just take my time and go through it slowly I think that I will become a stronger writer. Another piece of advice that I would give myself is to try to narrow down and concentrate on each paragraph individually rather than scanning and approving all of the paragraphs put together. I have a tendency to scan my topic and not provide exact details. I have some details but I am always on the broader line of not being enough. All of my English teacher the past couple years, said I need to concentrate on providing details and examples in my individual paragraphs. I have improved but I still need a lot of work in that area. If I were to give advise to myself as a reader, probably just be open to more types of articles or essays, and try to broaden my horizon of the pieces that I choose. I enjoy reading but everything I read has similarities to one another. If I can put myself out of my comfort zone when it comes to reading various types of work it will only make me more diverse of topics which is beneficial in all aspects of my life.

contributed

I had never taken a coarse that was partially in the classroom and the Internet. Usually by the end of a quarter you feel like you know each individual and what kind of work that that person is capable of. You could also tell what you mainly contributed to the coarse, but it is really hard to say due to the circumstances. Hopefully I was able to contribute at least something. I think that I mainly contributed hard work, and a lot more dedication that I have ever really done in the past. When we were in group discussions, I wish that I made people think in a different way or at least be aware of more events that are happening in today’s society. I enjoyed how everyone could use New York Times as the main text in this class because we could talk and write about situations that were happening around us. This made it really easy to voice you opinions as well as receive others views and details that you might have not been aware of. Overall when we were in the classroom, I put forth hard work, dedication, positive attitude and maybe swayed people to think differently about an issue or at least give them more knowledge.

which_grade

If I were to evaluate myself on my overall performance in this particular class I would have to give myself a B+ or an A. I am aware that my actual grade points might not give me an A or B, but I put forth a lot of effort to this class. I really tried hard with every assignment that was given and tried to focus more on the entire writing process. It is impossible for a teacher to see a student entire process of English because you have a different teacher of every quarter, but I think that I have improved a lot even compared to English 101. I remain focused through out the entire quarter and every paper that I turned in, I at least felt somewhat satisfied. Of coarse there is always something to improve in writing, I am not saying that I have perfected the skill and techniques of writing I just feel that I put forth a lot of effort which make me believe I deserve a B+ or an A.:)

Question

I just want to say, that I really enjoyed your class a lot and I feel like I have accomplished a lot this quarter. Because you were so faithful by using the Internet and keeping it updated, even when we did not meet in class it had no affect on me. I was really never confused once I got the hang of things. The way that you taught the lectures and different skills that you made available to us were very beneficial, so I would not change anything!!!! Thanks again for all of your wisdom!!!

As a writer, I've learned to consider my audience. Before, I never thought much about it. I need to focus on my readers, their feelings, and their thoughts throughout my writing process and narrow it down specifically. I still need to work on the narrowing down process and transitions. I know they're out there, but I just never seem to get a hold of them.

3_items

improved_most

I believe that I've improved on structuring my essays. It's beginning to become much more clear in my head whenever I plan what a paragraph should describe and where it should go within a paper. Perhaps it's all just repitition, but I feel more comfortable with that. I still need to improve on transitions as I said above. I also need to work on my conclusions a little. At the moment, it's just hit or miss.

proudest_of

student_advice

As a writer, I would tell myself to think about the audience that will read my paper. I would also say not to procrastinate! That is, I feel, one of my biggest weaknesses and I really need to fix that. As a reader, I guess I'd tell myself to not be drawn in so easily by pictures and the length of an article. Consider more of what the title is saying and decide if it interests me.

contributed

I feel that I contributed time, interest, and a bit of dedication. For time and interest, I often found myself enjoying the group days where we'd meet in the conference room. Most of the students had so much knowledge and passion about what they were saying, I could listen to them all day. As for dedication, I sometimes wanted to skip doing the discussion questions because 300-400 words is a lot! I'd put it off until Friday or Saturday; the two days where I toss all my homework in the corner and don't look at until Sunday night. Somehow, I've managed to answer them all with only one submitted late.

which_grade

Hmm...for performance I'd give myself between a low A and a B. I'd do this because I have submitted everything, to my knowledge, that was required but I didn't put my whole brain into it. I remember doing a paper of some sort and most of it was quotes. My friend commented on this and told me that it was the wrong way to write. To my delight, I got a good grade on it and bragged about it to my friend. I can't remember what I did, since my brain was wandering somewhere else when I was writing my paper. But on most of my works, I put in good time and thought.

Question

I really, really enjoyed breaking down into groups and going into the conference room. I felt more at ease with a smaller number of people and I felt I was able to learn more by what the others (and yourself) were saying.

I have definately improved as a researcher. I had to do at least some research for most of our papers and that practice and experience has helped me to learn to research more efficiently and take some joy in it as well. Improvement for me I think could come in working on organizing my thoughts in a better way. Much of the time I do not feel my thoughts in my papers were not put together in the best order.

proudest_of

English 101 was an easy class for me, I breezed through most of the class without many problems. This made me a little over confident going into English 201. It was kind of a wake up call when I got back my first paper. I guess what I am proud of is that I did not let myself get down after recieving my first grade. I just kept trying to improve and work hard and it paid off in the end.

student_advice

Advice I would give myself would go as follows. I would try to spend more time thinking about my topic in my head before outlining. Do more random brainstorming as well before starting to write. Also in writing my paper I should have spread the actual writing of the paper over a longer period of time and not just try to cram it into a certain small time period.

contributed

I think that I wrote on topics that were interesting to many different people. I tried to keep an open mind when hearing others topics and opinions. When I edited peoples papers I think I gave good quality feedback to improve their papers.

which_grade

I would give myself a B-. I feel I did an adequate job. There were definatly things however that I could have went above of what I did. I know I am not the best writer, but throughout the quarter I feel my writing progressed at a rate that was satisfactory to me.

I've increased my strength pool immensely throughout this quarter. I've become more efficient in my rough drafts and pre-writing, I've gained better insight as to how and why specific layouts and presentations of your thoughts, work more efficiently in essays. I’m still working on improving the layout of my essays, bringing stronger transitions, and expanding my ever growing vocabulary.

3_items

I am intelligent; show this with the depth of my thought patterns. Do not write as if you are writing to a non-intelligent audience, the audience I am targeting will understand my work. Continue to push and expand your mind, thoughts, and feelings, on subjects which I am normally closed minded too.

improved_most

My writing has taken a turn for the better; it has become more alive, more in-depth, and more efficient. I will continue to improve this skill, for I feel that it is a skill that I can master, if I so desire.

Continue to develop the skills learned, utilize them, and increase your knowledge in communicating the English language. Something many do, but few do well.

contributed

I have contributed effort, knowledge, biased and un-biased points of views, and time, to this class. I hope that others come out of this class with more insight into today’s world and culture. I know that others in this class have had that impact on me.

which_grade

I know that my overall performance in English 201 merits a grade of nothing less than an A. I’ve taken and applied the knowledge which Mrs. Strever has provided the class. Your time grading my papers has not gone wasted, as I take the time to sift through your notes, and apply them to my next project. My effort in this class has been one of a student whom is willing and desiring to learn. I am a student whom has not expected a good grade, but has earned a good grade. I hope you can attest to this as well.

Question

Mrs. Strever, I feel that you did a wonderful job throughout this quarter. This has been the most enjoyable English class that I have ever had the pleasure of being involved with. It was wonderful having the freedom to write and discuss topics on which I have an actual interest! So many other classes have such strict topic guidelines; ones that make me feel trapped, as if I am writing on a worthless subject. Your class did not, for this I am very thankful. Thank you for the time you took to answer my questions, it is very much appreciated. If I ever take another English class, I will be looking for your name. -Josiah

I have more knowledge of how research papers are made, how to collect information and how to use it and how to transfer smoothly from paragraph to paragraph. I am better at the writing of a thesis statement and conclusion. I still need to work on how to do MLA formatting, it's still very confusing to me.

3_items

1. That I'm not a good as writer as I believed. 2. I'm better suited as a writer for writing fiction. 3. That if I set my mind to do something be it a inclass write or research paper I can do it.

I improved in the area of writing thesis statements and conclusions. The body paragraphs, the support and arguments I need to improve on how to write these out to make my audience understand my point.

proudest_of

I feel the best about my latest research paper, it's not that good to another person's point of view but to me it is perfect, it has my voice in it.

student_advice

As a reader to read with the writer in mind, and for a writer to write with the reader in mind. Be nice to the readers and use language they understand and can appreciate.

contributed

I think I contributed another point of view. Like for instance white is a color; there has been some misunderstandings about that within the class discussion.

which_grade

I would give myself a low C, not that I want to of course but because of my organization and attendance of the class and how I wrote my papers. I think I wrote my papers perfectly but the journal entries and attendance questions and web exercises, well, I think I did pretty poorly on that scale. It was only in the last few weeks that I sort of sat up and said to myself, make an effort, it's not worth just sitting around like a dumb duck not trying to understand.

Question

I loved your class and the interesting topics you suggested us to write about, I especially loved writing about something I was interested in, not that the teacher chose and everybody had to write the same exact thing. That can get very boring. I'd rather have subscribed to US Today, but that's just me, I don't do well with serious small type newspapers that are critically acclaimed in books etc... I loved the seminars, they were very fun and a chance to meet fellow students. I met my new best friend this way! I think next quarter you could be more clear about where your class actually is located...and that having a working Internet service would be required. Thanks so much for the new information you showed me this quarter even if I was half present at the time. Thanks again!!!

I have gained several strengths by taking English 201. For example, I learned about level one abstractions and how to use them. This helped me because it gave me more insight into effectively communitcating with my audience. I also gained the abilityy to use transitions. Before I took this class, I didn't use transitions because I didn't think that they were necessary in my writing. Now I can see that transitions are like gravy on mashed potatoes: they give flavor and substance to an essay. However, I still need to work on becoming a level one thinker. I still have difficulty conveying my thoughts in a way that my audience can understand. I know that if I can keep working on it, I can become a firm level one thinker. I also need to work on my bad habit of procrastinating. I always put my paper off until the last possible minute, and that really hurts my ability to effectively communicate with audience.

3_items

improved_most

I think that I have greatly improved in my use of transitions. I also think that I have expanded my vocabulary greatly and that I have found way to give words new meaning. Furthermore, I think that I have become a better "distance" writer; that is, I can now write longer, better essays. I need to improve on creating a logical pattern of thought, because my thoughts are still scattered all over the page. Moreover, I need to become more experienced in using level one abstractions, because I am still a concrete thinker.

proudest_of

student_advice

I would tell myself to not put off a paper until a few days before it is due. I think that my practice of procrastination has hurt my grade because, even though I would like it to be true, I don't think better under pressure. Also, I think that a valuable lesson that I have learned during the past quarter is to pace myself in writing a long essay. I have found that I work better when I give myself more time to write an essay.

contributed

I feel that I contributed my editing skills to this class. I think that this is one of my strong points, and I helped others to improve their papers with my suggestions.

which_grade

I would give myself a B for my overall performance because I think that I did well, but I believe that I could have pushed myself harder and written better papers. I think that there is always room for improvement, which is why I would give myself a B.

Question

I think that the class would have been more effective if we had class more often. I found that i go sidetracked easily and that, if we had had class more often, I could have accomplished more.

gained

I feel that I have gained a lot due to the levels of abstraction being more prevalent in my writing than they were at the beginning of the quarter. I think that I ramble on too much in my papers and use waaaay too many words to make a point, which is something that I definately need to continue to work on.

I learned that I like to wait until the last possible moment to write a paper, and then they don't always turn out so great. But also, with that I learned that your peers are an immensely important resource in anything you are writing and it is always best to get a second opinion from one of them. Lastly, I learned that when I write I don't like to go very deep. I just scratch the surface of details and leave the rest to the readers imagination, but I also learned how to fix that so that my writing can improve.

Take your time when writing. Don't just throw random thoughts out on paper and then squish them together to form paragraphs. Make an outline, think things through, and take as much time as you need to complete a paper. When reading, if something has too much too it, skim for the main points, also, read to gain information. The New York Times is not always highly entertaining, so you have to read to gain information and perspective, not purely for enjoyment.

contributed

I feel that I contributed my thoughts, ideas and opinions to the class, especially during seminars. I think that I shared my viewpoints and gave what I could of myself to the class.

I would probably give myself a B. Because I put a lot of effort into my papers and journal entries, but I know that I probably could have done better. So, as a result I would definately give myself a B.

gained

As a writer, I feel I have gained strength in two areas. Before this class, I had never considered "audience" when writing. I realize now, how important the concept is, to the writer. Now, when I read the various articles in the newspaper, it becomes evident how varied the writing styles and the levels of complexity are. One can read the letters to the editors, and fairly accurately determine the person's age, level of education, and outlook on life, based on the useage of language in the letter. As a writer, as a person, I am striving to improve my writing ability. In business, successful people must be able to analysis a situation, and then compose intelligent written work. Thinking of the "audience" will be of tremendous value. The second area I feel stronger in, is knowing the contents of a well written introduction, the parts included in the body, and the elements necessary in a conclusion. Before this class I was aware of these three parts to a written body of work, but I was not informed of the details necessary for each part. There are two areas I need to work on. I, finally, have an understanding of how to properly prepare the "Works Cited" page, using MLA. But I do not feel comfortable documenting sources in the body of a paper. I have the handouts and they were helpful, yet, I need to understand more about the embedding of quotes and information in the body of an essay. I still need to practice and become more familiar with the art of transitions beween paragraphs!

For me, the best thing I learned in this class is that perseverance is rewarded. In the first few weeks, I felt that I might be in over my head. Kind words of encouragement from you helped me to believe in myself and to stay focused on the work at hand. About midway through the quarter I knew I would succeed. We were working on several projects at a time, which had been hard for me. The second thing I have learned, is the computer can be a friend rather than a foe. Although, I had used a sophisticated company program to balance and enter payroll information, I was not an avid user of the Internet. I now have confidence interacting on the web. I found myself checking your website daily, looking for changes and new things to do at your site. The Discussion Journels were interesting. I enjoyed looking at how other writers intrepreted the various topics over the weeks. Finally, I have learned so much about writing, while attending this class. But I have discovered there is a vast amount of knowledge still to be discovered, concerning writing and the use of the English language. I wish I had time in my schedule for more of your English classes.

I am most proud of my final research project. At times, I felt as if I just wanted to throw a temper tantum! Yet following through, I feel I managed to put forth my arguments in an intelligent manner. It is difficult, when you feel strongly about a topic, not to bulldoze your way through. The surveys used during both Research projects were helpful. I received valuable feedback, which in turn, allowed me to present information aimed at the attitudes in the audience. I know, had I been asked to develop an 8-10 page paper at the beginning of class, I would have been overwhelmed. The classwork and assignments were great stepping stones to the knowledge of how to research, and of the methods necessary to develop the final project.

This is a difficult question for me to answer. I tried each day to come to class prepared, to listen intently, and to ask questions when I needed clarification. Many times, on the lab days, myself and various students would discuss the current topics and assignments. This helped all of us to have a better understanding of what we were attempting to accomplish. I hope my assignments showed the work and effect on my part. I know you recognized when I was unsure of the exact nature of the topic under discussion in the journel! Perhaps, I should have discussed that with you, at the time. But I felt I should do my best with the level of comprehension, I had about the topic, at that time.

Looking at my overall performance, I would give myself an A. I was in class everyday, eager and ready to learn. My assignments were always on time, except when I thought the discussion journels were over after week four! I received high points on most of the work I submitted. Each classroom day was filled with such woderful information, covering so many topics. I would have enjoyed all five days of the week in lecture. As of today I have 95% as my overall score.

Question

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you how much I enjoyed your class. I had no idea of your difficulties this quarter, I do hope all has turned out for the positive. I had another teacher who missed many more days than you this quarter. I just assumed it was part of the learning experience for us, to check the website, continue our assignments, and work independently.
