Week 1: Introduction and Set-up.

bullet Introduction to instructor and classmates.
bullet One hour in-class writing.
bullet Policies and Procedures.
bullet Exchange email address with someone and contact them to write a short biography about them.
bullet Read the handout on thesis statements and complete thesis exercise.

Readings: Read pages 165-173 in your text, From Community to College (FCC).
Assignment: Choose a question from "Extending the Text" or "Exploring Connections" and write a short essay addressing the text. Be sure to include citations from outside sources -- your text as well -- to strengthen your points.

What's due:  Introduction of class member, feedback exercise, and thesis exercise.

Week 2: Methods of Development

bullet Read through the methods handout.
bullet Using the readings listed below, choose a question from "Extending the Text" or "Exploring Connections", then build an essay from the methods -- avoid the question that asks for a short story, as you cannot use methods in this manner.
bullet Read Essay basics -- Elements of the essay and The Writing Process

Week Three: Working with style -- Levels of Abstraction

bullet Find two separate paragraphs in your previous papers and expand the details using the levels of abstraction -- when you post to Norton, be sure to include both the old and new

Week Four: Research #1 -- Audience Paper

Process: 1st draft Wed. 6:00, offer comments to each other on Thurs. and Fri. -- revise -- 2nd draft due on Monday, the 30th

Week Five:  Making sense of transitions

bullet Read transition handout
bullet Choose two paragraphs from previous papers and rewrite them using the Transition textbook and the handout to help you with this.  Remember to include both old and new when posting in Norton.
bullet Process: 1st draft Wed. 6:00, offer comments to each other on Thurs. and Fri. -- revise -- 2nd draft due on Monday, 7th.

Week Six: Problem-Solving -- Reveal a problem -- then solve it

bullet Write about a problem in the classroom about either language or writing and solve it in an essay.

Process: 1st draft Wed. midnight, offer comments to each other on Thurs. and Fri. -- revise -- 2nd draft due on Monday, the 14th

Week Seven: From the Beginning to the End

bullet Read introduction and conclusion handouts
bullet Rewrite two introduction and conclusions from your previous writings -- when you post to Norton, be sure include both

Process: 1st draft Wed. midnight, offer comments to each other on Thurs. and Fri. -- revise -- 2nd draft due on Monday, 21th.

What’s due: Problem-solving paper

bullet You might want to start preparing for your final research paper, the topic is an issue in community or education -- try something different from your previous topics -- violence in schools? religious freedom? changing the curriculum to include sex education or multicultural studies or woman's study? Start researching now to avoid the rush!

Week Eight: Second Research project -- persuasive

bullet Choose a issue in education or community that addresses one of these and write a persuasive paper addressing it --

Process: 1st draft Monday, May 28th, midnight, offer comments to each other on Tuesday and Wednesday -- revise -- 2nd draft due on Tuesday, 5th.

bullet Using MLA, MLA Quiz -- due May 23rd

What’s due: Rewritten intros and conclusions

Week Nine: Documentation Exercises

bullet Model research papers -- read through efforts of former 201 to get the sense of what others have done with assignments similar to yours
bullet Post first draft of research paper on Tuesday (5-29) -- Peer Edit drafts of your groups using this guide -- this should occur in Research #2 discussion  on Wednesday and Thursday

Week Ten: Sentence Combining Exercises and Reflection

bullet Read and do the the Sentence combining exercises
bullet Process: 1st draft Wed. 6:00, offer comments to each other on Thurs. and Fri. -- revise -- 2nd draft due on Monday, the 11th
bullet Reflection essay  -- you do not need to offer feedback on this essay -- due the 11th

Week Eleven: Wrap Up

What’s due: Everything is due on Monday June 11th

In addition to the above, students will work with model essays, online discussion, and peer-group editing, among others.
