AKINS,
BETHANY -- Bethany is in
school to major in nursing. Her experiences at SCC have been ok
but she has had some problems getting into the classes she needs.
They are science classes that everyone else needs as well so it’s
been difficult for her. Outside of school she works with the
Spokane Chiefs everyday so that doesn’t leave much spare time. She
also used to play soccer. For her, reading is pleasure. It depends
a lot on the time and if it’s a really good book or not. She
doesn’t know what her best literature experience would be but the
worst has been reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin because
it always put her to sleep. She likes working in small groups as
long as everyone helps, and she has a special skill of being able
to take on any task necessary. by Brandy

AXEL, JAKE -- Jake is a current
student enrolled at Spokane Community College in Spokane,
Washington. He is majoring in architecture. So far Jake has
enjoyed his short time at the college and mostly enjoys his
fantastic teachers, along with the mostly nice and cordial people
that he has met. In his spare time Jake is involved in golf,
fishing and hunting. Reading is also one of his favorite
activities as he reads a couple chapters from a book each night
and is always looking for a good book. In his high school years,
he was in an expressive writing class, which allowed him to focus
on his favorite topics. The one literature experience that was the
worst for him was when he read George Orwell’s book concerning Big
Brother and the propaganda involved with it. He prefers to work on
his own rather than in groups, even though his experiences have
been pleasant. Jake has great creativity and is quick to ideas,
which helps him contribute to group projects. He is also
independent since he likes to work alone, and enjoys the time to
himself. Jake is also organized and does not like messes. He hope
to achieve a passing grade from his English 201 class, while
having a decent time and gaining a piece of new knowledge. by Troy

CICCARELLO,
CASEY
is majoring in Business here at SCC. Since he
has been here the quality of the teaching staff went far beyond his
expectations. When outside of class some of his activities are
playing basketball with friends, as well as learning Spanish because
it is his wife's native language. When reading, it is often times
leisurely and informative when taken upon by himself. For instance,
his favorite novel, "A Raisin in the Sun", a story about a black
family living in Chicago during the rights movement, was something
he felt inspired to read. When reading "The Canturbury Tales" by
Chaucer he had no ties with the book because it was not his choice
to read it. Casey looks forward to working in groups, so kong as
theer are no "dependent workers" who really on the rest of the group
to base their opinions on as well as procrastinating. This may be
due to the fact that he is very self-motivated and always works hard
until the goal is obtained. Casey is looking forward to the
challenges of this class in addition to any skills he will gain in
it. by Nathan Paul

CONNER,
BRANDY -- Brandy Conner is going
to school to become a teacher. Most of her free time outside of
school is being spent working. She goes to school full time and also
works two jobs. The two places that she works are Michaels Art and
Craft Store and also Mamma Mias Restaurant. English is not her
strong subject, but she enjoys writing for fun. When it comes to
reading she likes to read for pleasure, mostly when it is a good
book. The best literature experience she has had was back in middle
school. They made their classroom into a coffee shop and read poems
that they wrote. Having been in a class with her before, Brandy is a
person that is easy to get along with and a great person to have in
your group. She works hard and gets the job done when it is needed.

FISCHER,
JAMIE -- Biography Jamie Fischer, I’ll
begin with the two adjectives she said would best describe herself,
“ Blunt and sensitive “. When I first met Jamie, I could see she has
a straight, forward, blunt side. I soon found out after talking with
her on the phone, about this bio. , that she does have a more
sensitive side. Jamie is not yet certain about what her major is or
will be. She sounded eager to get into the studies to decide her
direction. Jamie has taken first place in times of high competition.
She is a confident person, who’ll get along with you, as long as you
do your part. Jamie spoke of making friends in her English 101 class
and commented that she enjoys working in groups, mainly to hear all
the different ideas and opinions. From the interview, Jamie Fischer
is going to continue with her accomplishments, be it school studies
or any goals she sets out in front of herself. by Ryan McIntosh

GUTIERREZ,
LISA -- Lisa Gutierrez had
resided in Washington State most of her life, where she enjoys
attending Spokane Community College. Her experience so far at SCC
has been enjoyable. In her opinion teachers are there to help and
the quality of classes are good. She has been attending school for
some time to fulfill her major as Vet Tech/Pre Vet. Currently she's
not involved in any extracurricular activities, although during her
spare time she enjoys spending quality time with her family. Reading
for Lisa is an enjoyable and relaxing time well spent. A couple of
her favorite books are Scarlet Letter and the Bible. There is one of
the worst literature experiences she has come to past is the
Huckleberry Finn, she thought the book was boring and uninteresting.
It can be rewarding when comes to working in small groups in Lisa's
opinion, although can be challenging if some people in the group
don't participate in the assignment. There are a couple of
adjectives that would describe Lisa. She is opinionated, not afraid
to speak her mind and share an opinion and loves animals. A very
important and helpful is organization skill, which Lisa has that
would benefit the group in many ways. There are a couple of things
Lisa hopes to gain from this class would be to improve the usage of
writing in different formats and writing skills. by Yelena Oleynik

|
KOEHN,
TONI -- Toni Koehn is majoring
in Liberal Arts/Radiology. Toni's experiences at SCC have been
overall rather smooth except for dealing with financial aid which
has been a nightmare. Her extracurricular activities include
crocheting, building dollhouses and playing with her German Shepard.
When she thinks about reading, it is highly pleasurable. She enjoys
reading but doesn't have that much time with all the reading
correlated with college classes. Toni's best literature experience
was in her 11th grade English class while they read several authors
from different countries; she found this very interesting and
enlightening. Her worst literature experience was deciphering
Shakespeare and that era of writing. She found that you have to
concentrate on just trying to understand the general idea with out a
whole lot of time to discover the meaning behind the words. She
feels that working in small groups is fine. She has supervisory
skills acquired while being a supervisor at Target for 11 years and
will use them to enhance the workings of her group. Two adjectives
that describe Toni is extremely positive and happy. After a decade
of a bad marriage and severe depression she decide to get a divorce,
remarry and change her attitude (now very happy). by Joe Kopp

MARR, HEATHER -- Not Your Typical
Nineteen Year Old Some people may say that teenagers are stubborn
and sleep during the day and party at night but one Spokane nineteen
year old is much different than that. Heather Marr is nineteen years
old, mature, and knows where she is heading in life, and has a life
that is very different than that of the typical teenager stereotype.
Heather has many goals for herself in the future and many things she
enjoys doing in the mean time to keep her busy while working towards
them. Born in Colorado Heather lived their with her parents and her
older brother Erik until Kindergarten, where she then moved to
Spokane Washington. Heather went through her twelve years of
education at public schools here in Spokane where she went to school
because she had to, not so much because she enjoyed it. In school
one of her least favorite things to do was read; however, she did
stumble across one book she enjoyed and that was titled “ Where The
Red Fern Grows”. As Heather made her way through her high school
years she knew it was time to began thinking about her future and
what she wanted to do with it. Heather never enjoyed school but knew
that a strong, solid, college education was key in being a
successful person. She thought long and hard after graduating from
high school and came to the conclusion that she wanted to enter into
the medical field. Today Heather is enrolled in classes at Spokane
community College where she currently is working on her AA, making
her way to her goal of being a Dental Hygienist. She has enjoyed her
time thus far at SCC and has had nothing but pleasant experiences
with the staff and the school. Although she has intentions of being
a Hygienist she has long-term goals and hopes of some day becoming a
children’s dentist. Heather has some very exciting plans ahead of
her in life and has a very strong will to succeed. When someone is
as driven in life as she is failure is nowhere around. As Heather
drives forward in life academically she still knows how to have a
good time and can be found doing so out on the trails. When Heather
isn’t being diligent in her studies one can find her in the
mountains on a trail riding her quad or motorcycle. Between that and
listening to music Heather couldn’t find herself more relaxed. by

MCINTOSH,
RYAN -- Biography Ryan McIntosh,
there is a lot to say about a man who is 30 and going to college.
This is something a lot who are not fresh out of school find quite
difficult, but Ryan has found it in himself to finish school after
going on and off for about a year and a half. While working for a
Harley Davidson shop Ryan finds time to go to school to get his AA
degree and eventually get a degree in veterinarian medicine. While
he is studying and working on motorcycles, he still finds time to do
his favorite hobbies which include fishing, snorkeling, and
swimming. Ryan likes the education structure at SCC and finds it
very educational. He reads for pleasure most of the time and doesn’t
see it as a chore. Currently he is reading Sphere. So far Ryan has
really enjoyed his college experiences. Nothing has embarrassed him
or made him feel like he shouldn’t be going to school. An
embarrassing moment he did have in high school though was when he
was in the middle of a speech and, he just began laughing
uncontrollably. Ryan hopes history does not repeat itself in his
college speeches. Ryan mainly enjoys working in large groups as long
as everyone plays their part and nobody likes to take control. He
tries to be open-minded while in a large group and wants everyone
else to do the same. Two words that would best describe my classmate
Ryan McIntosh would be open-minded in the sense that he listens to
other peoples ideas and tries to see things from someone else’s
point of view. He also is very defensive of the people around him,
he will defend his friends and family against all obstacles and try
to be there for them as much as he can. by Jamie Fischer

Meduna, Erik --
Eric Meduna is attending Spokane
Community College and is working toward his Associates degree. After
accomplishing this, Eric plans to continue his education in Physical
Therapy. Thus far at SCC Eric has had pleasant experiences. He has
had good teachers adn a positive experience overall. In talking with
Eric I found out right away that he is a book lover. He enjoys
reading anytime and anywhere. He loves it so much that he often
spends most of his time at work reading. His favorite book is called
"Johnny got his Gun" written by Dalton Trumbo. It is taken from the
perspective of a man that has been in WW1 and has no limbs and has
lost the majority of his senses. His least favorite read was "Pride
and Prejudice." Eric enjoys working in small groups as long as
everyone gets their work doneand he feels that he adds to the group
by being open-minded and his willingness for discussion. by Brianna

MILLER, RYAN -- Ryan is attending
Spokane Community College in order to receive a degree in Business
Administration. At first going to college did not appeal to Ryan,
but now he realizes what a great opportunity he has to shape and
direct his future. When Ryan is not fulfilling his college
obligations, he enjoys sports, especially basketball and golf. Ryan
keeps informed about sports by reading ESPN Magazine. Ryan is taking
this English 201 course with the goal of becoming a better writer as
well as understanding more about the different ways he can
incorporate his current writing skills. Although Ryan likes telling
stories and expressing his opinion, he does not enjoy writing them
out. In fact, Ryan’s worst writing experience happened to be a
letter he wrote to a girl that she rejected. Ryan would enhance any
group he is in because he likes to hear everyone’s opinion and form
logical conclusions. by Josh Phillips

MULLENIX,
TROY -- Troy is at Spokane
Community College currently working towards an Associates Arts
Degree. He has enjoyed his experiences at S.C.C. so far, and enjoys
it more then High School due to the lack of drama included, that
High Schools seem to have so much. Most of his extracurricular time
is directed towards his job. Troy sees reading as more of a pain
than pleasure due to the fact that his time is limited, he does read
up on the paper occasionally though. His best literature experience
was taking a college class back in High School, which no doubt
prepared him more for the college level’s. His worst literature
experience would be Junior High Literature. Troy enjoys working in
small groups as long as everyone participates and the task at hand
gets accomplished. His skills he employs towards the groups effort,
is his lack of giving up and he always partakes in getting the job
done. He explains himself with two adjectives as being shy and
humorous. Troy hopes to gain in English 201 a better understanding
of different styles of writing. by Jake Axel

MUSSER, BRIANNA -- Throughout the
course of human evolution great mind have defined our living
standards of today. Nostradamus surprised the people the people of
his time with his revelations and shaped the history of our
current time. Plato an extraordinary thinker, who produced great,
minds that of Socrates. And now we have an revolutionary mind with
us now Brianna Musser. Brianna has been the Spokane Community
College cycle for a while now, but while she may be taking
classes, she does not know where to place her expertise in as of
now. While her stay at S.C.C. has been fairly enjoyable with more
good than bad moments, things like parking can dampen the S.C.C.
experience. An avid worker, you can find her spending her free
time involved in her church, and other church related functions.
Finding reading more please than chore, she often reads, Jane Eyre
ranking number one on her list. While she likes to read, you can
often put her into misery with the mere mention of Tom Jones (Not
the singer). Brianna, while preferring individual work, doesn’t
mind group projects as long as everyone does their part of the
work. Her perfectionist tendencies are and asset to any group,
assuring that she will tie up and loose ends. Friends describe
Brianna as fun, and undeceive (it took her five minutes just to
answer this question). While English 201 proves to be an
interesting class, Brianna hopes to come out with better writing
skills. by Erik Meduna

NEWBERRY, MORGAN -- Morgan Newberry is
a graduate from Ferris High school and is now currently in her 4th
year at Spokane Community College. Three years ago Morgan was
married to a man in the Army and then moved to California. While in
California Morgan took internet courses through SCC. After living in
California, she moved to the warm and beautiful, Hawaii. Some time
after living in Hawaii, Morgan decided that her and her son were to
move back to Spokane, so that she could finish her schooling. The
main goal at SCC is to finish her AA and then to proceed into
Architecture. Other than spending most of her precious time with her
son, Morgan spends her extra time working out. When the though of
reading is brought to Morgan's mind Pain comes to her mind. She has
never really enjoyed a reading experience, simply because no one has
given her a pleasurable reading experience. Oddly enough the worst
and best literature experiences were form the same Philosophy book
in Winter Quarter 2004. Individual work is preferred, but small
groups are better than large groups. Morgan does what she has to do
to get her work done. Morgan is both Stubborn and open-minded
because she is stuck in her ways yet she will listen and be open to
new ideas. Morgan simply wants the ability to write better after
this class ends. by Ambular1717@hotmail.com

OLEYNIK, YELENA
-- Yelena Oleynik was born in Ukraine
and is now 26 years old. When she was eleven her family moved to the
United States. One thing that Yelena likes to do in her free time is
to read. Her favorite book is "the White Oleander" and any book from
Oprah's book club. The worst book she ever read was "The Poison Wood
Bible", because it was too hard to understand. While attending
Spokane Community College she is majoring in nursing. She is very
patient and enjoys being around people, because of this she feels
this will be an ideal profession for her. So far she has enjoyed her
time at SCC. She likes the flexibility of the class schedules, and
most importantly she likes the fact that tuition is cheaper than it
would be at a 4 year university. by Lisa Gutierrez

PATTERSON, AMANDA -- Amanda Patterson
is your typical small town girl. She was born in Spokane, and then
moved to Sacheen Lake. In 1998 she graduated from Newport High
School and entered college. After a couple quarters, Amanda decided
this wasn’t the life for her and that she would take a break and
work for a while. Currently she works two jobs and has recently
begun attending Spokane Community College for another try. During
the week she works as a Dental Scheduler and on the weekends she
answers phones for a local real-estate company. During her break
from school Amanda met and fell in love with her husband Shawn.
Shawn Patterson works for a local cable company and also volunteers
for the local fire department. Between the two of them they lead
very busy and demanding lives. To add to their already busy
lifestyle Amanda and Shawn also have three children (Amanda’s
step-children) who obviously take much of their attention. Shandrea,
the oldest, is 13 and is in seventh grade. The two younger children
are Abagail age 7, and Shawn Michael age 6. However, the list of
family members doesn’t end here, in the Patterson household there
are more than just kids. There are also two dog’s named Dusti
Patches, and Ana Belle. Dusti is a 4 year old Blue Heeler; Ana is a
3 year old Australian Black Heeler. They also claim some feathered
friends in the form of two Parakeets named Baby and Sweetie. But
wait, there’s more, let’s not forget the chickens, and there are two
of them also. Their names are Cowboy and Betsy. Betsy has a very
neat trick, she can lay colored eggs, and the color she lays is
blue. Amanda’s goal is to become a Dental Hygienist. She has to
fulfill her pre-requisites before transferring to Eastern Washington
University. She plans on transferring sometime within the next three
years. Besides juggling work, kids, and school Amanda manages to
have a few hobbies. She enjoys Gardening and going for Hikes with
her husband and step-children. She also enjoys reading Shakespeare.
Amanda’s two best characteristics are that she is easy going, and a
very hard worker. by Melissa N. Wiykovics

PAUL, NATHAN --
Nathan Paul is a liberal arts major who
is enrolled in the head start program. He has a brother, who also
went through head start, whom he looks up to. Though, technically,
still in high school he has had many a good experiences at SCC and
enjoys the challenge of College. His first quarter he read 1984 by
George Orwell in his 101 class, in which he found the characters to
be intriguing and captivating, an unexpected surprise compared to
his unenthusiastic experiences with William Shakespeare. Nathan
likes recreational reading and welcomes the opportunity to work in
small groups. Like most of us he hasn’t had much experience in
hybrid classes, but is optimistic about its communal effects. Being
open-minded and friendly, Nathan will learn a great deal more about
his writing and develop beneficial relationships with fellow
classmates. by Casey Ciccarello

|
PHILLIPS,
JOSHUA -- Josh Phillips is a student at
SCC currently pursuing a degree in Nursing. He enjoys going to
Spokane Community College because he thinks that this school has a
good learning environment. Josh currently has no extracurricular
activities so he has plenty of time for writing. When he does think
of writing though, it is painful. He has never liked to write, but
is improving as his college experience progresses. His best
experience with writing was in Eng 101 in which he learned a lot
from his instructor and that helped him in his other classes. His
worst experience was in Psychology though, because no matter how
hard he tried the teacher played favorites, and gave him undeserving
bad grades. Josh tries his hardest to keep up on the news daily, and
believes that the news is factual most of the time. He subscribes to
the Spokesman-Review. He enjoys working in small groups as opposed
to larger ones. Josh would fit in great in any group because he
enjoys working with people. He is very dedicated because he is at
SCC for a reason and wants to get the most out of this experience as
possible. He is also a family man because he believes that his
family is the single most important thing in life. He hopes that by
taking this class he will gain a better understanding, through
feedback, on how to improve his writing skills. by Ryan

|
REEDER, AMBER
-- Amber is in her 3rd
year at SCC and was involved in the Running start program. She is
now majoring in Radiology. She likes SCC but feels it is a little
too much like high school. Outside of school she is involved in
Softball. She feels reading is both a pleasure and pain. It would
depend on what she was reading and why. Her best literature
experience was Romeo and Juliet and he worst was Satire. Amber would
rather work in a Small group then a large one, but would altimetry
like to work alone. She doesn’t like to have to relay on other
people to get her work done. But when she does work in a group she
is very good at getting the work done. She doesn’t like to start
something she can’t finish. She would describe herself as very
outgoing and she doesn’t care what people think of her. When she is
done with this class she hopes to walk away with better writing
skills. by Morgan Newberry

REEDY, KIMBERLY
--
A student at Spokane Community College,
Kim is working towards a degree in the science and medical field.
Kim enjoys everything about college, and feels that the people and
teachers here are some of the best in Spokane. The people at S.C.C.
are able to push for better work and still pat you on the back when
you deserve it. Although Kim prefers to read for leisurely activity
she loves to write her own poems. Besides being a full time student
she is also a full time mom. She has three boys at home, 4, 7, and
10. Most of her extra time is spent being with them. All of these
things combine to make Kim a very imaginative person as well as a
compassionate one. With the ability to listen well and speak her own
mind, she is an asset to any group dynamic. by Tiffany

|
SANDERS, TIFFANY-- Tiffany Sanders is a
thoughtful and fun person. It has been said that she will dance like
a fool to make someone smile. As a college student she has realized
the potential she holds inside. Through life experiences she has
been fortunate to break out of her shell. After being a mom, playing
tennis, and working out she has a passion for reading. A good story,
that tends to just pull you in, is the ones she’ll grab a spot on
the couch, with a blanket for. Anticipation of “What’s going to
happen” is enough to set aside personal time. However, she has had a
bad experience with literature. That would be a book called “A
Clockwork Orange. In the book they have their own language, and that
barrier was enough to bury her. Although she is all for fun and
games, she does hold a serious side. She is a science major working
for a degree in the medical field. Earning a future for herself and
her daughter is the most important thing on her list. by Kimberly

WIYKOVICS MELISSA
-- Melissa
Wiykovics was born in Puyallup, Washington. When Melissa was 12
years old, she met the love of her life, Michael, to whom she wed 4
½ years later. Melissa and her husband moved to Spokane where
Melissa graduated from high school in 1998. She has been attending
Spokane Community College for 3 years now working on her
prerequisites in hopes of transferring to Washington State
University’s Pharmaceutical program. Melissa has obtained her
certificate as a Licensed Pharmacy Technician (LPT). Just recently,
Melissa changed her major from pharmaceuticals to Accounting with an
emphasis in Business Administration. Her goal is to obtain a Masters
in Business Administration (MBA). Melissa is a busy mother of three.
She not only attends school, but she does work-study and spends time
with her family. Melissa and Michael have three daughters: Kara age
8, Gabriella age 6, and Natalie age 2 years. They also have the
typical family pets: two cats, Issabella age 4 and 1 year old
George. Jillian Marie Wiykovics is the family parakeet. Melissa’s
husband Michael is also a student. He is currently attending Eastern
Washington University where he is working toward his Masters.
Michael’s major was Mathematics and Computer Science. He also
minored in Physics. When Michael isn’t in class learning, he is in
class teaching at EWU! As a family they enjoy camping and hiking so
much, they literally go every weekend of the summer! Melissa enjoys
doing cross stitch as well as being the “mom’s taxi.” The girls are
in Basketball, Soccer and Gymnastics. Melissa wouldn’t say that
reading is her favorite past-time activity, but she does enjoy a
good Danielle Steele novel every now and then. If you were to ask
Melissa to describe herself in two words or less, she would say she
is motivated and hardworking. (How could she be anything less with a
busy lifestyle like hers?) Melissa looks forward to group projects,
but only if all members are consistent and everyone contributes.
Since English has never been the highlight of her schooling, Melissa
is hoping this English class will provide her with her first
enjoyable English/Literature experience to help her obtain a strong
sense of correct composition and better understanding of the English
language. by Amanda Patterson
