Week 1: Introductions

Students will be assigned an interview partner. The partners will interview each other and exchange email addresses.
For homework, each partner will write a profile of the partner based on the interview.
These should be sent to the epartner for correction or clarification.
The final product will be sent to the instructor for posting on the class home page by the first Monday after the initial class.

Week 2: Compare/ Contrast Essay

  • Chapter 8 -- The Arts: Read pages 181 -198;
  • Be sure to review both the prewriting and writing process before beginning your essay;
  • Write your own essay comparing two of the essays you read --  See
  • Exchange your draft Wed. night by 6:00 p.m. with your partners to receive peer comments -- use this edit sheet ;
  • Comment of peer groups papers on  Thurs. and Fri. -- return comments by Fri. 6 p.m.;
  • TJE due Friday, midnight; post to board
  • Re-write your essay based on group feedback -- it's due to Jan by Monday, Week 3  Remember to submit in .rtf (rich text format), so that I can use the program that I have to make annotations.  Click here to find out more.

Week 4: Process Analysis  (4/25-29)

In this assignment we are going to use the aid of student essay to help us understand the  essay that we will be writing:  the process analysis.  Please go to http://ol.scc.spokane.edu/jstrever/models/essays/process/default.htm read at least four of the essays.  Then write a short note on the discussion board about the traits of the "how-to essay.""

write your own "how to" essay discussing one of the processes that occurs in advertising, i.e., how do advertisers reach their audiences?  how do advertisers create belief in their audiences, how does brand recognition occur and what can we do to avoid it...these are just some ideas. Week 8 Gender (5/22-26)

  • Monday: C/E due -- Read Gender handout about assignment
  • Review -- Chapter 15 in PCI
  • Find two articles on gender and media -- one using Foley and one on the Internet
  • HW: Finish reading The Refuge
  • Review Model gender essay and teacher comments
  • Brainstorm gender and media-- do actual field research for gender and media and i.e., surveys and interviews
    • survey at least ten people with at least ten questions ... if you want me to, I will look at your questions before you ask them
    • if you want to pair or team up with others, the better your results will be
  • Arrange to interview two different stakeholders (people who are affected by the issue you will be researching)
  • Send Thesis statement for Gender research paper to partners for help by Thursday, 7:00 p.m.
  • Read and give feedback to group members' Thesis statements on Thursday
  • Read the information about compiling a book review;
  • All other rewrites are due 5/20  by 6:00 p.m.!!!!

Week 11: Final Portfolio Work

Be sure to peruse the answers to the Review Questions to help you prepare for the final in-class essay!

T:  Final Meeting --

Portfolio due... include either

  • the gender, the cause/effect, or book review paper  
  • and one  TJE,  and
  • one reflection paper to be included in portfolio.

We will meet from 3:30 to 6:30 on Tuesday  in Room 1220G Old Main.  
Gender Paper due.
Turn in complete journal.
All work must be completed at this time.

 

Class is over for fall quarter.  To figure out your grade, go to the Userspace and find the total number of points that you earned in English 101, then come back to this page click on Grades and find your grade point on the scale.  For example, if  you earned 1155 points for the quarter, your grade in this class would be a 3.3 for the quarter -- of course this only holds true if you passed the English 101 Exit Portfolio with a passing score.  If you did not pass the portfolio, I can only give you a 1.9 in the class, as that is department policy.
