English 101 Portfolio Assessment
Winter 2004
Description:
A portfolio is a collection of your writing that provides an accurate window into your
strengths and weaknesses as a writer. Twice during the quarter, your writing will be
evaluated by English Department Faculty other than your instructor. Readers will be
examining your ability to organize and develop ideas effectively as well as your
competence in using Standard English and MLA documentation.
Grading:
Students who meet the standards for their portfolio work will be eligible for grades of
2.0 or better in the course if they have that grade before taking the portfolio. Students whose portfolio work does NOT meet minimum standards will not be
eligible for grades of 2.0 or better in the course. Both mid-term and final
portfolios must be completed in order to receive a passing grade in English 101.
PORTFOLIO INSTRUCTIONS
I. Your MID-QUARTER PORTFOLIO is due to your instructor Wednesday at the end of class
period during Week 6. To be considered complete, it will consist of the following work:
1. An in-class essay written Wednesday, consisting of both rough
draft and final draft. (An outline is an acceptable substitute for a rough draft.) This
essay will be an in-class "reader's response" to the first section of
Long Ranger and Tonto. The question you are to answer will be distributed during class.
2. An out-of-class essay, consisting of assignment sheet, and both rough and final drafts,
which will be the compare/contrast essay.
3. A TJE, preferably revised.
Assignments will be placed in a manila folder with both your name and your instructor's
name, as well as the class time, on the outside.

II. Your FINAL PORTFOLIO is due on Wednesday the 4th of Dec. To be considered complete, it
will consist of the following work:
1. An in-class essay written in the blue book on Wednesday after completing the following required work:
be an in-class "reader's response" to the Long Ranger and
Tonto. The question you are to answer will be distributed during class.
2. An out-of-class essay either c/e, gender or book review (or all), consisting of
assignment sheet, and both rough and final drafts.
3. Both of the above assignments need to be "text-based." That is, the writing
should be in response to a reading and should incorporate references to that reading.
4. A TJE revised.
5. An exercise or the punctuation handout.
6. A Reflection essay where you have attempted to address the issue of language
and your. Please use this handout to help.
Assignments will be placed in a folder with both your name and your instructor's name,
as well as the class time, on the outside.
Portfolios will be graded by two other English Department instructors. The results
will be posted on my outside door on Monday. In order to
receive a 2.0 or better you must have "passed" the portfolio. While only
your teacher gives you a numeric grade on your portfolio, the other two sympathetic
readers' scores determine whether you pass or fail.
