[KayCee] --
[Maynard H -- Overview: I have been given a great gift, the chance to complete my education. The goal is but a vision that came to me shortly after retiring from the navy. It is to be able to help this great state of ours in an effort to help mold the minds of our future generations and be able to teach once again. I have chosen this course to be one of the stepping stones of my path to that endeavor. Objective: Initially I had signed on to this course because I really have no clue, when it comes to poetry. I thought that due to the title of the course "Introduction to Poetry", that I would be able to learn more about poetry; since I believe it to be important to the English language, and a part that I have often overlooked. It will enhance my overall understanding of English and help propel me towards achieving my goal of attaining an English minor. By the end of this quarter I truly wish to walk away from this course with an appreciation of poetry and a greater understanding of its importance to the English language. I also hope that having this in mind may help me to pass that knowledge on to my future students. All of these courses that I take are not about the final grade but about what knowledge have I gained; and how will I pass it on as I continue on down the path of life.]
[Candace L -- I am here in this poetry class to better my writting skills. I love poetry. It is a way express my thoughts on paper. I can say, it is better that punching a wall or smoking a cigarette. I want to learn anything that you are ready to teach me. I am here with all ears. If I come out of here hating the poets I have read than, so be it. If I come out of here enjoying other authors, great. Either way, I am here to learn about poetry and to improve my poetry skills. I dont hate poetry at all. There are some poems I would rather read than others. They all, so far, have gave me various outlooks on poetry in general. Thank you! Candace Lane]
[Kyna O -- Hello out there! I am very happy to be participating in Into to Poetry, Eng. 275. I am looking forward to everything I can learn from both my class and my classmates! As a student who has completed all the English requirements for my degree, I am taking this class soley for self-enhancement and enjoyment. My goals for achievement from this class are:
As cheesy as all this is, you asked, I answered. ]
[Hanz G -- Goals are essential elements to any student who intends on accomplishing anything throughout the duration of a quarter, and I certainly have some goals indeed. I am finishing my degree here at SCC this quarter, and I need a little boost in my GPA, so one goal of mine is to attain a 3.5 or higher in this poetry class, by extensively delving into all the information that is presented to us in class, and devouring it as a ravenous wolf thrashes his lamenting prey. Being a lover of the English language and it's use, I am anxious to utilize the opportunity to expand my literary capabilities in this writing intensive course. I am sure we are in for some good times as a class, if we all focus on collaborating and communicating, which includes objectively listening. Have a great quarter, and let the games begin.]
[Danielle C -- Though I have only been writing poetry for barely one year, I have come to realize that I am a natural poet. I chose to take this class to learn how to write many different styles of poetry and increase the level of confidence that I have in my writing abilities.]
[Lawrence G -- I have a solid preconceived notion regarding the use of poems as a method of communication, and as to what I feel toward poetry in general. I have not written much poetry, and I have read far too little to be considered anything over an analytical novice, however I value what poetry offers as a creative means of release. This is what I would state is my main goal for the course; to fortify my knowledge of the mechanics of poetry, and to better grasp my own ability to manifest on paper what I feel within myself.]
[Amanda H --
[Lorri P -- My goal for taking this English class is not clearly known. When I take classes my main goal is to do well. To me I can only tell if that has been accomplished by the end of the class or after the class has been going for some time.]
[Chris P -- Ultimately, my main goal for this class is to pass with flying colors and receive the five credits needed for the completion of my Associate of Arts degree. This could be accomplished through the enrollment in any one of a number of less difficult humanities courses, so why "Intro to Poetry"? First of all, poetry has never really had a place in my life. In this course, obviously. I will read a lot of poetry. Hopefully, somewhere along the line, I will broaden my horizons and gain a respect, if not interest for poetry. Second, the skills involved in reading and writing poetry can be applied to so much more than the art itself. In other courses, for example, the analytical and interpretive abilities one gains from reading poetry can be used to better relate to the voice of an author in a piece of literature. The skills of self-expression gained from working with poetry can find application in the interpersonal communications of everyday life. It is my personal belief that poetry is the highest form of writing. Needless to say, poetry also requires the highest level of thought (analysis) to be interpreted. In addition to my five credits earned with flying colors and an appreciation for poetry, a better mastery of analytical thought is my course goal.]
[Heather R]
[Jamie W --I plan to get a well educated view on poetry in this class. Poetry has always been one of my many passions. It is my therapy as well.]
[Kara C -- My goals for this Intro to poetry class are to learn to understand the depth of poetry. I want to learn how to better interprate and appreciate poetry.]
[Chelsa G -- My goals are to become a better observer of poetry, and to understand the meanings, and to just enjoy myself and others in this class]
[Meghan N -- I have several goals for this class, and yes, even though it does sound quite drab, one of my goals is to get an A in this class. The second of my goals is to better grasp an appreciation for the written arts, along with learning how to successfully write and define poetry. And my third goal is to prove to myself that I can be successful in this class, and many others. I moved to Spokane just one week before class started and the move was a very big and sudden event in my life, both for me, and for my family. No one in my family understood why I had to move to Spokane, or why I had to move during the winter like I did, but they were still supportive. I had a few hundred dollars in the bank to get me started, but I also had to barrow the rest of the money that I needed, from my mother, until I get financial aid to pay her back with. Out of respect for myself and gratitude for my mother's investment, I am planning to submerge myself in my school work and hopefully receive (earn as it may be) an A in each of my classes so my time nor my mother's contribution go without great accomplishment and pride. One of the things I currently posses a large amount of respect and appreciation for is other forms of art, such as: performed, sculptures, paintings, drawings, sketches, etc. Although I enjoy all these things very much, reading has always been a struggle for me. However the dauntingness of reading is eased when I find something that I enjoy. My appreciation of other forms of art allows me to enjoy nearly all I see, and my goal is to find an equal appreciation for the writes arts, hopefully allowing me to enjoy more readings and also better myself in my ability to read. I also plan to find the ability to successfully define poetry as well as write it properly as I journey to find an appreciation for the written arts. For myself I also have the goal of self pride. Because I have not been back to school for some time, along with other things that have happened in my life during my time away from school, I began to doubt my ability to succeed if I went back to school. I also found the first day of this class extremely intimidating, but I have now committed myself to the teachings of poetry and I plan to succeed. My way out of poverty and into prosperity is a good education, and it is important to me that I prove to myself that I am worthy of a better life. I am grateful to all who have made this opportunity available to me. Meghan M. Niles]
