Discussion of Process Model Essay

This student model essay is a simple process essay. This piece of writing shows one way
of using email, though not the kind you are used to, I suspect. You will note these items:
it has a title that gives the reader a sense of what the
topic is about;
the introduction gets to the point;
the thesis statement is the last sentence in the
introduction: a thesis statement states the topic of the paper with the writer's opinion,
in this case, saving money and using email;
the first body paragraph explains what is needed;
note, too, words that might be unfamiliar to the audience are defined;
in the next body paragraph, the author begins discussing the
process in painstaking detail;
the third body paragraph finishes the process;
both of the body paragraphs make use of bullets and indents to help differentiate
commands from text;
finally, the last paragraph sums up the benefits of the
process.
Things to remember when writing your own essay:
- Again, write from your own voice....
- Keep your sentences short and to the point -- process essays are not the
place for complex-compound masterpieces. Your point is to explain how something happens as
clearly and precisely as possible.
- Limit your topic -- many times our inclination is to write everything about a
particular task; however, your audience is trusting you to teach them one small process.
- Remember what it was like before you knew how to do what you are explaining -- every
detail is important, no matter how petty it may seem.
- Get rid of excess baggage -- after finishing your essay, look at you sentence
construction. Are you using too many adjectives, adverbs or prepositions? Reread the essay
model; you will note the language is sparse, but the message is clear.
- Oh, have fun....
