English 101 Portfolio Assessment

Fall 2003

Description:

A portfolio is a collection of your writing that provides an accurate window into your strengths and weaknesses as a writer. Twice during the quarter, your writing will be evaluated by English Department Faculty other than your instructor. Readers will be examining your ability to organize and develop ideas effectively as well as your competence in using Standard English and MLA documentation.

PORTFOLIO INSTRUCTIONS

I.  Your Final PORTFOLIO is due on Thursday. To be considered complete, it will consist of the following work:

1. An in-class essay written (in the blue book that you furnish) on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday-- the topic will be an in-class "reader’s response" to  Orwell's 1984. The question will be distributed during class.
2. An out-of-class essay, consisting of assignment sheet, and both rough and final drafts.   In this case, rewrite your
gender, the cause/effect, or book review paper.
3. A rewritten, typed journal entry should be included.
4. An exercise such as the punctuation handout or the discussion questions, or MLA exercise OR you may choose to include a writing from one of your other classes.
5. All of the above assignments need to be "text-based." That is, the writing should be in response to a reading and should incorporate references to that reading.
6. Assignments will be placed in a folder with both your name and your instructor's name, as well as the class time, on the outside.
7.. The final piece to be included as the first essay in the manila folder is a reflection essay.

II.  The portfolios will be read and scored by two separate English instructors.  To pass the final portfolio, it must receive 16 points or above out of a possible 24. If you have a 2.0 in the class and you pass the portfolio, you have met the requirements of the class.  However, please remember you must have a 2.5 or above to enter into English 201.

If you receive 15 points or below and you do not have above a 2.0 in the class, you will be required to retake English 101 at a later date. However, if you receive 15 points or less and have over a 2.0 in the class, you must contact the instructor and the available options will be discussed with you.  Your grade in English 101 will be recorded as a 1.9, which will be changed as soon as you do the necessary work to successfully pass the requirements of English 101.

Portfolios will be graded by one other English Department instructors.
