Week 1 -- Preparations and Beginnings

Mandatory Meeting -- Thursday, Sept. 22nd, 3:30 to 6:30, Room 1220 Old Main, S.C.C. Campus

Please read the syllabus to understand

Week 1: Introductions

M:  Intro and instructions.

Protocol and

Students will find an interview partner. The partners will interview each other and exchange email addresses.
For homework, each partner will write a profile of the partner based on the interview.
These should be sent to the epartner for correction or clarification.
The final product will be sent to the instructor for posting on the class home page by the first Monday after the initial class.

Week 2: Compare/ Contrast Essay

M: Introductions due.
Review Writing Process
Use Compare/ contrast handout  and write your own essay
Click here to find your Feedback Group.  Please write to your group members as soon as possible to ensure accuracy of email addresses, etc.  Email addresses can be found on the roster.

  T: Send C/C Essay by midnight to peer partner for comments.

W &T: On Wednesday and Thursday read and comment upon your peer partner's essay. Exchange your draft with your partners to receive peer comments -- use this edit sheet.
You must contribute a draft to your group to participate in this activity. You will not receive  FB points if I have not received a copy of your draft, and when finished, a copy of your feedback.
Return essay with your comments to author by Friday midnight.  
You must also send me a copy of your feedback, so that I can award you FB points.  I will only award FB points to those who submit FB by the appropriate time. 
If you do not receive an essay to read by Wed. evening, please contact me, so that I may find someone with whom you can exchange drafts.
Moreover, if you receive an essay on Friday or thereafter, you are not required to offer feedback on it, as FB days are Wed. through Friday and no other time.
Giving and receiving feedback are valuable learning assets that will enable you to increase your learning in an efficient and rewarding manner.  Those who partake in the process as prescribed benefit in ways too numerous to mention.

F: Submit TJE#1 to instructor by 6:00 p.m. Friday evening

Week 3: Exercise One -- The Thesis Exercise  (10/2-8)

M: Email Teacher final draft of compare/contrast. Review thesis handoutComplete thesis exercise.

T: Send your completed thesis practice to your email partners. Do NOT submit it to me for grading. Instead copy it into your word processor. Do the practice and send it to your group members for comments.

W & R: Read and give feedback to group members thesis statements. Offer feedback. You must contribute a draft to your group to participate in this activity. You will not receive FB points if I have not received a copy of your FB draft.

Begin reading All Quiet on the Western Front (AQWF).

Complete -- Preview Sheet on the novel. Send it to me by Monday, 10/10.

Read Elements of fiction.-- Conflict 

F: On Friday, return feedback to partners. Be sure to send a copy of your feedback to me, so that you can receive your feedback (FB) points. HW: Rewrite thesis statements--due to me on Monday by 6:00.
TJE due by 6:00 p.m. Friday.
 Read Chapter Three and Chapter Four in your text, pages 39-61.

Week 4: Process Analysis

M: In this assignment we are going to use the aid of student essay to help us understand the  essay that we will be writing:  the process analysis.  Please go to http://ol.scc.spokane.edu/jstrever/models/essays/process/default.htm read at least four of the essays.

write your own "how to" essay explaining some sort of process that you have experience with -- but be creative, write the opposite...read handout to find out more;

review model process essay and its critique;

Week 6: Mastering Punctuation (10/23-29)

M:  Ten perfect sentences due by 6:00 p.m.

T: Write your own punctuation handout using commas, semi-colons, subordinating conjunction, coordinating conjunctions, colons (in other words, any of the ones mentioned on the punctuation handout), explaining the one punctuation device that causes you the most problems;

W: Send your completed handout to your peer partners.

W & R: Read and give feedback to group members handout. You must contribute a draft to your group to participate in this activity. You will not receive FB points if I have not received a copy of your FB. There will not be a edit sheet for this activity, just use the handouts as check points.

W: Review Using MLA, MLA citations, embedding quotations -- complete MLA exercise, send to partner for feedback.

R&F: Peer edit MLA exercise--use your handbook, the handouts and your common sense to help your group members to the best of your ability.  In fact if you want, you may pair up with others to work on this the initial handout together, just let me know, so that I may make note of it.  The point of this exercise is that you understand the workings of MLA.

Week 12 (12/1-5)  Portfolio Week

M-R: In-class essay.

Be sure to peruse the answers to the Review Questions to help you prepare for the final in-class essay!

 Portfolio due on Thursday. It is to include at least five items:

 either

 the revised gender or

the revised cause/effect or

book review paper

and
the in-class response to the AQWF question

and
a revised TJE

and
a revised exercise (either the Punctuation Handout or the Discussion Questions),

and
 one reflection paper

All work must be completed by 

Portfolios will be graded on Friday, December 5 by two other instructors who teach 101. The results will be posted on my door, 239 A,  by Monday.

You can look in the gradebook to see your Exit Portfolio score:  if you receive 10 points on PR (Portfolio Results) #77 in the gradebook, that equates to a Fail; 12 points equals a Low Pass, and 14 points equals a Pass.

If you receive a fail on the portfolio, you will need to contact  me. I will be in my office next week each morning from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Monday, Dec. 8., be sure to look at the number of points you have accumulated in the gradebook, then go to the grade page and find your overall class grade by comparing your total points to those posted.
