Sarah Anderson --
My name is Sarah Anderson. I am majoring in general business currently at Spokane Community
College. I have only been at Spokane Community for one quarter, but so far it has been pretty
uneventful. I love to outdoors, camping, hiking and motor-biking. I have always enjoyed writing I
think of it as a self-expression. My best ever writing experience is my journal I have kept one
most of my life. Having all of this recorded is very nice to look back read. I have seen a great
deal of change in my writing over the years. While attending University of Idaho I had the worst
writing experience. I had to write a paper contradicting my own views; it was very difficult to
get in the mind set to do that. I prefer to work in individually but whenever I am put together
with others I work well. If I had to describe myself in two adjectives they would be motivated and
responsible. I am motivated because I believe there is no progress unless you act upon things. I
am responsible because I am well organized and I take care of myself. My favorite author is Jack
Kornfield. The last book I read that wasn’t assigned was “The Mask of Benevolence.” An
activity I would recommend doing in Spokane, even though I am new to the area, is jogging the
Centennial Trail in the morning. A special talent you wouldn’t know about me by looking is I can
sing. by Codi Freeman

Angie Cain--Angie
Cain is in her third quarter here at SCC. She plans to transfer to an out of state four
year college still unsure of her major of study. Angie is a creative person who enjoys
drawing in her leisure time. She describes writing poems as fun creative work, and her
favorite poet being her Dad. Her best writing was in an English 131 class here at SCC. She
was excited to be in a class where she could express her feelings in her writing, analyze
poems and do research. Angie loves working in groups where she brings her opinions and
writing skills to work. She also says her high school English classes were too
constrictive and formatted for her style of writing. High school never gave her a chance
to bring out her creativity. Angie just finished reading My Life As A Girl. Her favorite
author is Nicholas Sparks. This creative and opinionated girl says that Spokane best
places to visit are the Rocket Bakery and Trist. Angie's talents include self-discipline
and an open mind. She says she can resist the normal temptation to eat junk food and judge
people before knowing them. by Amanda

Willie Clowser
-- Willie Clowser is currently a student at SCC. He attended Montana State University in Bozeman,
as a freshman out of highschool. After taking a little time off from school he decided to enroll
at Spokane Community College. Willie really enjoys the outdoors, especially snowboarding, fishing,
hiking, and also partying. He plans to transfer to Eastern or the University of Washington after
SCC. Willie's best writing experience is writing about something he's interested in. His worst
writing experience he described, is having to write a research paper on a topic he's not
interested in. His favorite author is Rudolph Giuliani, and he just completed Giuliani's book
"Leadership." Willie suggests visiting an excellent Tai restaurant call the Tai Kitchen.
He says it's, "hands down the best." Willie also regards himself as a damn good cook,
and he is a very energetic and outgoing person. by Travis Williams

Codi Freeman -- Codi
Freeman is currently attending Spokane Community College to earn a Basic AA degree. She is
currently in an English 201 class. In Codi's free time she enjoys playing sports like basketball,
running, and snowboarding, she also enjoys working. When she thinks of writing she thinks of it as
a pleasure if she has a strong passion for the topic, but it's a pain when it comes to putting it
correctly on paper. Codi's best writing experience was when she wrote a story about her sister and
her. She loved the story so much in fact that she gave it to her sister for a present, and her
sister now keeps it on her fireplace. Her worst writing experience was in her English 101 class,
the teacher told her to write about her family, she spent weeks working on it, and when the
teacher handed it back with an "F" she was hurt. Codi is fine with working in small
groups, as long as everyone helps. She is good with coming with random ideas. When asked what two
adjectives best describes her she said that she was independent, she's so used to doing everything
on her own. She also thinks that she is a strong person, never letting her real feelings show.
Codi does not have a favorite author, poet or playwright. She doesn't remember the last book she
read, since she hasn't read in years. She would recommend going to the Onion Downtown, see Big ED
the bartender and make sure that you order the Mozzarella Sticks. Two special talents that she has
that you would never guess by seeing her is that she was a firefighter for two years, and that she
can clean, run and fix a chainsaw. by Sarah Anderson

Rahad Gaballa --
Rashad Gaballa was born on November 7th 1983. He was born in Iowa City, Iowa. Rashad only lived in
Iowa for about three months. Rashad then moved to Spokane. After living in Spokane form about 8
years he moved to the coast. The move to the coast included stops in both Seattle and Tacoma.
Halfway through 6th grade Rashad moved back to Spokane where he has lived ever since. Rashad’s
major in college is the AA. Rashad has enjoyed his experiences at SCC. He has only been going to
the college for a little over two quarters. During his first quarter he took an IDS class that he
really enjoyed. He also enjoyed his second quarter that consisted of Phil 101, Polsci 202 and Hum
101. Rashad’s extracurricular activities include working, his car and flag football. Rashad
works at the U-city Rosauer’s. He ahs worked there for three years now. He is a boxboy and a
grocery clerk. Rashad’s car is a 2001 Volkswagen GTI VR6. Rashad just purchased this car and
loves it very dearly. Rashad also plays for a city recreational flag football team. Rashad has not
always thought very highly of writing. In high school he did not enjoy the subject very much.
Rashad always received good grades in English, however. Rashad always feels that his writing is
not that good but still somehow manages to get good grades. Rashad’s best writing experience
came in his IDS class. Rashad thought the class was going to be very unenjoyable due to the fact
that the class had to write a paper every week. As he got into the quarter he found the papers to
be getting easier and easier. All of high school was a bad experience when it came to writing
papers for Rashad. Rashad thought that working in small groups would be a good idea. The special
skill that Rashad has is that he has been in seminar format classes before so he is experienced in
this area. The two adjectives that best describe Rashad would probably be interesting and quiet.
Rashad hopes that he will simply improve his writing skills a great deal in this class. by Jim Dailey

Brandon Haugen-- Brandon Haugen is a positive, enthusiastic, and determined
person who is working toward an Associate Degree at Spokane Community College. Brandon
finds himself at SCC after spending 10 years working first at Albertsons and then at URM
after high school.
Brandon is working at URM while attending classes and little time
for anything else, however, when time permits he is an active, adventurous spirit who
enjoys the natural world and the outdoors. He especially enjoys the Sandpoint, Idaho area
and the Little St. Joe River. Attending Washington State University football games are
also high on his priority list of cool things to do in the area. When asked about what
there is to do he also responded, "Just choose something you're interested in and go
do it".
He has had a positive experience at SCC; however, he draws a parallel to high school
relative to the general atmosphere. He feels that both faculty and students are
overwhelmingly helpful and encouraging. While everyone has been supportive and encouraging
he has noted a lack of professionalism on the campus.
In the summer of 2000 Brandon visited Zimbabwe, Africa for
a 6 month mission to help and assist a community of people with their physical and
spiritual needs. The experience was truly transformational for Brandon as he learned while
helping and was helped by learning. The opportunity to assist people within their
community while viewing the community through an American lense provided him with a
cross-cultural experience that broadened his perspective and created value for himself and
others. Brandon carries a peaceful and calm spirit that is evident when talking with him.
In addition, his helpful and supportive nature is quickly seen.
His favorite poets are Beck and ColdPlay. For most people these
names best describe musical performers rather than poets, however, Brandon with his
eclectic personality sees the poetry behind the music. Reading is not high on his list of
things to do and he does not recall the last book he read. The same thing can be said for
the last play he attended. Reading books and attending theater are not real conducive with
outdoor activities; judging by where he goes we get a notion of what he likes to do. As
Joseph Campbell said "Follow Your Bliss"; it appears that Brandon is doing just
that.
Brandon is looking forward to English 201 with an ambivalent attitude. Though he likes
writing, his preference is to be in control of the topic. His bittersweet affair with
writing is underscored by a difficulty he has getting started but once in progress he
enjoys writing immensely. by Tony Plager

Lynn Murinko --
At the age of twenty-two Lynne Murinko is attending her fourth quarter here at Spokane Community
College. She's shooting for her Associate of Arts Degree in the nursing program and plans to
transfer to Eastern Washington University to for a Bachelor's degree. At this point all of Lynne's
experinece's at S.C.C. have been positive. As a working full-time student she has little time for
extracurricular activites, but when time permits it she enjoys being with her family, going to
movies and church and will be joining a softball team sponsored by her employer. Lynne doesn't
consider writing to be her strongest point. She has no problem developing ideas for writing, its
putting them on paper that's the challenge. When it comes to group work Lynne is a little
apprehensive about relying on others to complete assignments. She enjoys working individually, but
if everyone participates she has no problem with group work. Lynne's not an avid reader but she
enjoys reading poetry by Charles Swindoll. Her favorite is called "Attitude." Having
lived in Spokane since she was a todller, Lynne knows about the activites unique to our area. She
suggests if you have the chnace give Hoopfest or Bloomsday a try. She also enjoysSpokane's parks
and going for walks on the Cenntenial Trail. by SPEZIALE SARAH |

Sarah Speziale --
Sarah was born in Spokane, Wa in 1983 at Deaconess Hospital. During elementary she traveled to
three different schools; Greenacres, Freeman, and Progress. For Junior high she attended Evergreen
Junior High. During high school she went to Central Valley, but attended SFCC (Spokane Falls
Community College) for both junior and senior years. This is her first quarter at SCC (Spokane
Community College) and she is loving it. She said, " I first noticed how much nicer the gym
is at SCC rather than SFCC". Sarah plans to finish her liberal arts degree, then transferring
to Eastern for her BA in physical education. Most or almost all of her extracurricular activities
consist of working out, playing softball, running, bike riding, etc. Some of her other favorite
hobbies are baking and reading certain books; such as, murder mysteries and love stories. When it
comes to writing, Sarah said, "Depending on the type of paper they can bring her, both, pain
and pleasure"! She has always been told by her family and friends that she is a good writer.
Sarah's biggest English influence is her mother, a reading major and college professor. If the
choice of paper was Sarah's, her decision would be an informative paper. A paper in which she
stated, "I feel my heart and soul goes into my paper, because I have the ability to use
personal experience and honesty". Two descriptive words for Sarah's personality are athletic
and outgoing. Athletic because of her love for physical activity. She works out three to four
times a week, but does take the weekends off. As for outgoing, she has been told that she is by
her family and friends for as long as she can remember. Phantom of the Opera is her favorite book
of all time. She doesn't have a favorite author, but she loves classic books; such as, Phantom of
the Opera, Wuthering Heights, etc. Actually she had just finished reading Wuthering Heights for
the second time. Wuthering Heights is a tragic romance novel. If she could show someone new what
Spokane had to offer for fun, for sure, she'd take them to the AMC Theater at River Park Square,
LazerQuest, and of course the Nascar Indoor Speedway. To sum Sarah up in one sentence would be to
say, "She is an all around girl with many talents and wonderful attributes". The End! by

Amanda Stailey
-- Amanda Stailey is going on her sixth quarter at Spokane Community College and says that her
experiences so far have been good. Next, I proceeded to ask Amanda it she knew major yet. I was
surprised by the slight chuckle in addition to her reply of, "medical assistance, at least
for this quarter". When she is not exercising her intelligence at SSC, she attends her
meetings as the Vice president of the "Marine Corps League Auxiliary". Other days she
might catch up on her reading with the novel "Dream Catcher", by Stephen King. She also
enjoys taking her children through the many parks dispersed throughout the Spokane area. At first
glance, one would never guess that a fishing boat might be occupied by this distinguished young
woman, but she admits that this is one of her strong suits. Relating to strong suits, an attention
to others strengths as wells as recognition of her own combine to make Amanda a perfect candidate
for working with people. Her sociable impressions don't hurt either. But she hasn't always felt as
positive about her abilities as she did today. She timidly recalls an in-class write for English
101where she drew a complete blank. She later confesses that writing is more of a painful task
than an enjoyable advantage to her spare time. Although Stailey does not always enjoy writing, she
does have a passion for the formulated style. One assignment that she particularly welcomed was a
paper explaining the process of a math problem. After a long day of fishing for parks, retaining a
Stephan King novel, socializing about mathematics to her "Marine Corp League Auxiliary"
buddies, and recognizing every bodies abilities, Amanda still has time to settle down with a good
Shakespearean poem. by Angie Cain

Travis Williams
-- Travis Williams is a native of the great state of Montana. He hails from a small town in
southwestern Montana called Three Forks. Travis came to Spokane to attend Spokane Community
College, where he plays basketball for the college. His experiences at SCC have treated him fair,
but are nothing to brag about to his friends and family back home. Since SCC hasn't provided quite
the excitement he expected, he spends most of his free time shooting hoops. When Travis isn't on
the court he finds time for class, which includes English 201 everyday at 8:30 a.m. Travis is
pretty neutral when it comes to English though. When it comes to a topic of his choice, he is down
with writing. He says he is able to do his best work when writing on a topic he enjoys. On the
other hand, assigned topics can be a little rough on him. Travis found out like the rest of all
English students, sometimes instructors give the worlds worst assignments. But, being that he is
on a basketball team, he is good at group work. Travis likes to dig in and heavily research a
topic. He prefers the group setting because everyone has a role to contribute to the project as a
whole, much like a hoop team. Aside from shooting hoops, Travis has his nose in a few books
outside the classroom. He has a ton of authors that he calls his favorite. These authors range
from fiction writers, non-fiction authors, and even a few poets. The book he just finished which
he recommended entitled, All Quiet On the Western Front. Coincidentally, when he isn't shooting
hoops or engulfed in a book, Travis is watching hoops. He did give Spokane credit in that
department. Between Gonzaga, EWU, and SCC there is some great hoop action in the area according to
Travis. One final note you should know about Travis, which is not guessable by looking at his tall
frame is that he is hell of a tennis player. by Willie Clowser |
