How to Write a Summary-and-Response Essay

A Summary-and-Response essay incorporates another’s words with your own.  The process begins by reading another writer’s essay.  Next we begin our essay with a brief summary of theirs as well as blend appropriate words from their essay into ours.

First, let’s look at a few examples.  Begin by reading the professional essay Don’t Let Stereotypes Warp Your Judgment by Robert Heilbroner.  Once done, read the two student examples that follow and note how Heilbroner’s words have been blended into the student writers’ words.
