How to use the ProQuest database to locate Cliff Schneider’s essay “I’m Still Learning From My Mother.”

J I recommend you check off these steps as you complete them.

____1. Go to our S.C.C. campus website (http://www.scc.spokane.edu).

____2. Once there click on the "library" link (down the left side of the screen).

____3. Next click on Databases A to Z, under the heading "Library Databases."

____4. Scroll down the list of databases to “ProQuest” and click on it.

____5. If you are off campus, enter your Student Identification Number (SID) as your Library Card Number and click "continue."

____6.  Click on the words “Advanced Search” located just above the right side of the white subject strip.

____7. When the new screen appears, type the title “I’m Still Learning from My Mother” in the top subject strip.  Then click on the down arrow next to “All fields + text” to the right of the strip. When the list of options appears, find “Document Title” and click on it.

____8. Next, in the second subject blank (the blank just below where you typed the title) type in the name “Schneider.” Click on the down arrow next to “All fields + text” to the right of the strip and choose “Author.”

____9. Click “Search.” If all has gone well, you should be looking at the name of this article (“I’m Still Learning from My Mother”).

____10. To view the full article, click on the blue “Full text” choice.

____11. You now should be looking at the full article with its abstract (summary) above it.

Research Hint: When you are looking for several articles on a particular topic, all you need do is read the abstracts (summaries) of the potential articles to decide which you should read fully.

____12. Now collect the proper citation for the article. To do this, scroll to the top of the article and click on “Cite” located in the blue strip.  You should see the MLA 7th Edition citation for this article.  Copy and paste this “Works Cited” citation to a blank MS Word page and type above it “MLA FORMAT.”

____13. Next, click on the down arrow to the right of the “MLA 7th Edition” blank and choose “APA 6th.”  Click “Change” and then copy and paste this citation also to the MS Word page, but type above it “APA FORMAT.”

____14. Highlight the entire article and copy and paste it to the MS Word page above the MLA and APA citations.

____15. You now have all you need to use ideas and words from this article in your essay.  In addition to the article itself, you have the article’s citation in two formats and can choose the one your professor or college prefers. (The SCC English Department prefers MLA.)
