• What is the relationship between Sylvia and Miss Moore? How do Sylvia’s responses to Miss Moore differ from the other children’s?

• What conflicts exist among the children themselves? Please name and describe them.

• In Paragraph 58, Sylvia says to herself that she will have “to think this day through” and that nobody [is] gonna beat [her] at nuthin.” Why does she react this way? Is she a developing character?

• What is the theme of The Lesson?

In Exile, pp. 140-147

• Who is the protagonist of the story? Does the central conflict involve man against man, man against environment, man against himself? Elements of all three? Explain by citing examples.
