Culture Project Calendar                           InSync Culture Project

As a final InSync activity, you will each undertake a project requiring you to do research, to write a short report, and to make a short presentation to the class on a culture or subculture of which you are NOT a member.  The entire project will be worth 60 points. Those points are earned by meeting the specifications given below.

v  Decide on a culture and find at least one good source – 5 pointsDUE Nov. 7

v  Create a working bibliography – 5 pointsDUE November 14

·        Develop a list of 3-4 different sources about your chosen culture or sub-culture.

Print or copy of at least the first page or copyright page of each source to turn in with the list.

·        One print source and one Web source must be part of this list.

·        As part of the list you turn in, write one or two sentences about why you think each will be a good source for your paper.

·        You may have one, but only one, encyclopedia as a source.

v  Write a 2-3 page report on your topic – 40 points total

I    Outline  5 pointsDUE Nov. 21

·         Have an outline of the report that clearly shows the 2 to 3 aspects about the culture that you plan to include in your paper.

II    Rough Draft – 5 pointsDUE Nov. 28

·         Have a draft of the paper to turn in for peer editor feedback.

III    Final report – 30 pointsDUE Dec. 2

·        Include a title for your report, your name, the course’s name, the instructors’ names, and the date.

·        The report itself is to be typed, double-spaced, with margins of 1 inch, and using a traditional (Times New Roman) 12-point font.

·        The report will have three major sections:

Ø  an introduction that gives some background or geographic context with one sentence that clearly identifies the main idea (overall impression/your opinion) about the culture or subculture.  Also in the introduction you might include what prompted your interest in this culture or subculture.

Ø  the body of the report that explains two or three important or interesting aspects of the culture or subculture. Please fully explain each aspect in one well developed paragraph.

Ø  a conclusion which pulls the paper to an end and which presents what you personally learned by doing this project

·        The final page will be a List of Sources. These are the sources you used to gather information. While you are not being required to actually cite these sources in the paper, you need to credit them at the end of your paper. You will be listing them in alphabetical order using MLA format. Please see the SAMPLE that is also part of this handout.

v  Make a short presentation to the class about your topic – 10 points –Likely dates for presentations:  Wednesday and Thursday, November 30 and December 1.  Presentations should be two to three minutes long.
